I am curious about using an internal balanced steel crank with stock rods and je pistons. Do I need to have the whole rotating assembly "zero" balanced? The crank is already zero balance but I am unsure about the rods/pistons which is why I am asking. I know I need a new balancer and flexplate too.

Also, does the BHJ internal balaced balancer have the interupter ring for the crank sensor? Thanks.

James,

I'll see if I can answer your question and hopefully it will make sense. The steel crank you have is designed to be internally balanced where as the stock crank is externally balanced. This being the case you can use any rods and pistons but the whole assembly will need to be balanced together.

Typically people will either opt for the stock balance percentage of 36.6% or 50% for competition use. The parts that won't work with your steel crank will be the stock balancer and flexplate as they are designed to be part of an externally balanced engine.

You will need a neutral balanced flex plate (preferably SFI approved) and a neutral balanced dampner too. BHJ makes a dampner with a trigger ring for our application and J&W makes a flexplate.

I hope this helps

Thanks for your reply, Neal.

I assume the balancer that BHJ makes will work with the stock crank sensor (ie, doesnt require any modifications)? Just want to double check.

Thanks again.

James,

You're correct. The BHJ dampner will work with the stock crank sensor. You will probably need to have it the I.D. honed to provide the correct fit to your crank. The BHJ is a interference fit not a slip fit like the stock unit.
