The hood and ram air intake are worth $4-500 by themselves to someone hunting that setup down, I had never seen one on a Camaro...I converted my '95 TA to a ram air, those fiberglass hoods are expensive if their is no damage to it.

Sounds like a good fun car for the buck.. Heck drive it for a year and resell it $500 less. Its like you owned it for $500

what gears would yall recommend? Also does anyone know anything about performabuilt transmissions...theres a guy selling on for 600...only 2000k miles on it

Choice of gears depends on the useage.

Automatic
For best mileage: 2.73
stock: 3.08
stock with performance axle option: 3.23
Performance with reasonable mileage on highway 3.42 (stock, stick shift cars 94+)
Performance without mostly highway use: 3.73

4:10 is really not well suited with the automatic, especially if you plan on any highway driving at all. Not to mention, with these cars the higher the gear ratio..... the more difficult it is to end up with a quiet rear. 3.73s tend to whine a bit and 4:10s can be worse.

I would go with either a 3.42 if you do a lot of highway driving, 3.73 if you are mostly around town and some highway mixed in. Now with a stick shift car, 4:10s are the way to go with the double overdrive in the trans and the internal trans gearing. no matter what, you'll need to reprogram the speedomter via a program for the ECM.

i would go 3:73 in an auto and 4:10 in a 6 speed :eek: ... but watch the rear end an make sure u have a loop

3.42 gears are the sweet spot for most small blocks. once you hit 3.73 gears, the car might get faster but the mpg starts to fall off. and with the deep frst gear of the 4L60E trans, you don't need a lot of gear to get off the line.

My 95 is a daily driver, just went to 3.42s from the original 3.23s.. not a huge change, but I do alot of freeway driving and my orig 3.23 were very worn and needed replacing anyway, it did really wake the car up down low. A friend switch his out to 3.42s on his 6-spd and it really woke his up as well. All the 6-spds I know of have 3.23s in them. Autos had either 2.73s or 3.23s.

In regards to 4th gen cars, you must be mistaken.

Here are the RPO codes:

GU2 = 2.73 (V8 A4 without "performance rear axle)
GU4 = 3.08
GU5 = 3.23 (V8 A4 with "performance rear axle)
GU6 = 3.42 (V8 with M6 - all)

The only exception was in 93, where the lower first gear that was in the M6 allowed a 2.73 rear gear. That was changed for 94 and later. All M6 cars came with 3.42s

what if it does need a trans rebuild? Should I try to get him down to $800 or is that pushing it? Also, does anyone know anything about performabuilt transmissions? I know a guy selling a performabuilt 4L60e with 2k miles for $600. How does that sound?

Good Gosh buy it already, if it ****s out on you sell it by the pound for scrap and make money....

$600 is cheap for a good used performance trans. Depending on what upgrade parts are used, it would be easy to dump $1500 and up on a 4L60E. they really need a hardened sun shell and 23 element low sprag plus upgraded clutches. Try and find out what was done to it.
