Well everyone knows about the problems Ive had with my car. Blown motors, new motors, blown HG's, broken trans etc etc. Well I've been hearing this whining sound when the car is being driven under load and sometimes when it isnt under load (I think) coming from the transmission area. I just had the trans completely rebuilt by a reputable shop locally. I have a PTS 9/11 converter and had it sent back to PTS for a restall for the bigger turbo. This noise wasn't their on my old set up (before the restall)? Is the noise coming from the converter after the restall? Should I replace the converter (more MONEY) or is this normal?

Did you ever find out what the noise was coming from? My car just started making a whining noise also. Jimmy from jimmy's transmissions seems to think it could be the fluid pump going bad. I'll hopefully find out what it is next week.

This "noise" issue seems to be going around the TR ranks. My GN has been doing this for at least 2 years now.

I've had my converter cut open and inspected only to be told that there was nothing wrong with it.

Then, I dropped my car off at Lonnie Diers shop in Cincinnati, OH and he had my trans out at least 6 different times and his conclusion was that I needed a new converter. He checked clearances and the front pump and the whole shooting match before arriving at his final decision. I had him try an orange stipe club converter that I had spare and it made the same "whizzing" noise while in gear. Loaded up or not, the same noise is always there and the "whizzing" noise moves about with the RPM's as well. Lonnie tells me that he put a bone stock 2200 stall D5 on it and the noise went away?????

I'm about to buy a new converter, and if that's not the cure, well....I guess I'll have a nice new converter!! ;)

My car does the same thing, Im getting my tranny rebuilt next week as well as a refresh for the converter so we will see if that solves it. Until then I just open the dump so i cant hear it

That's what I've been doing for a while now....open the dump and it's hard to hear anything else for sure!!

UPDATE: I installed a new 3200 10.5" lock-up from C K Performance Transmissions and the "whine" noise issue is solved!! It's the first time in 3 years that my GN is now whine-free!!! :D My converter was the culprit the whole time.

I move slowly when it comes to the transmission out of fear that I'll wipe my bank account before someone finds the problem and actually repairs it.

Well none of my whining noises went away. I got a new vigilante torque converter, and had the third gear clutch plates with the drum replaced. I still have the whining noise mine is in my axle. Hopefully I have mine fixed this week. glad to hear your car is quiet now.
