Is this how the search function works?

I tried to find a member and when was the last time that he/she posted and the results came up with nothing. I then did a search on myself and it only comes up with the threads that I started. Is that how it works? I thought that if you did a search by a user name the results would be all posts that the user participated in would be displayed but it appears that it is not the case unless I am doing something wrong or is that the limitation of the search engine being used?
