I have burned MANY times with the UPS on-line rate calculator.

You can get a rate, then go to drop it off and the increase is sometimes double?

Yep, I suspect that is the reason most have gone up so much on shipping. What the computer says it "should" be and what it actually is, is rarely the same...

Use of the "UPS STORE" Will get you burned.. big time!
Got had 1 time w/ that idea. A set of Hemi pushrods back to the mfgr: 3x the incoming cost....

I have one in my town and I use the store just to get a shipping quote. I then go back to the buyer. I dont know how they stay in business! I never see any traffic in the store. There`s a big ups hub a few miles away, which is were I ship from! I asked them if its the same price and he said yes.(He lied)

I agree. I donated a computer to a friend's lil sister and the UPS Store wanted $124.37 to ship it to Reno, NV. I got myself a 18x24x24 box, bag of shipping peanuts and went to UPS and shipped it for $41.00.

Sounds like an issue I had with 'Gbodyparts'! Hidden charges are pretty lame.

Hidden charges? When you order on line it is in front of you before you check out.
I know we lower shipping prices on most orders placed.Had an order come in today. Even if we could have combined shipping it would still have been more then $20 on the 3 items.

Every month we get the Shipping bills, it's the same thing shipping calculators show us one price on line. When we get the bills there are 25-30% larger then they should be.Residential delivery fees etc.

I own a industrial coatings company. We ship hundreds of packages a day using UPS and FedEx. You put the package on the scale put in the address and you get a price, that is the price you pay. If its residential you pay extra but it is what it is. If you as a buisnesses owners are paying more at the end of the month than what you are charging you have issues. Call your rep and give him a piece of your mind. everyone is hurting including them you have levarge as a customer.

Being in the mail order business we ship probably 85% UPS. What does occur and in most cases we catch it and correct it, is on some internet orders the calculations are way high for a little part or person buys several little parts and we put them in one box.

Like I said generally we catch them.

The proper term as someone stated above is shipping & handling. While you get some boxes free special size ones can run $5 to $10 each. Someone made a small fortune producing those stupid packing kernals which is used by some companies....

We buy rolls of the air bubbles they can run $60 or more per roll. Fortunately I have a great tie in with a place that deals in newspapers and I get stacks of newspapers free for packing....

Some companies especially on ebay can be clever by making part of their profit come from shipping. Those companies end up shooting them selves in the foot if they are trying to get repeat customers...

Again just my thoughts....

IMO shipping cost is what the shipping company is going to charge. Shipping cost is not the customer paying you for your time to put it in the box. That is part of doing business online. You wanted to sell it online, you can take the time to put it in the box and package it. If anything you should charge more for your product to cover that cost of doing business.

I have sold and bought tons of stuff on Ebay. If I charged Half of what I thought my time was worth nobody would by the stuff! It is just part of doing business online.

Ah! Dennis! So THAT'S why every time I get a very fast, nice order from you, I get the latest news of what's going on up there in Pennsylvania!:D The car classified section is a nice read, too. It's almost like having a free newspaper subscription from PA! And just as good as receiving a coveted Grand National part from you!:p
