today was the last straw. I was driving down the road at about 35, just driving along and out of no where the car dies, i had the radio on and didn't know it, i just saw a whole bunch of lights light up and thought oh crap my engine is going to blow up. I hit the brakes because there was some traffic not knowing that the engine was dead, i went for the gas and nothing happend and then i realized that i was at 0# of boost and there was no oil pressure. so i went to pull off to the side of the road and guess what, no power steering, so then i went for the brakes (vacume) and guess what, no brakes and a cop car right in frount of me. so there i am both arms yanking on the wheel and both feet on the brakes. thats just the straw that brokes the camells back. last night i noticed a puddle of antifreeze on the ground, while i was looking for the leak i found that the pressure hose for the power steering pump is on its last life, it bulges out and has a hole, that explains all the oil over the engine. this was all in the last 24 hours... The car likes to die occasionally from a stop, just hit the gas, and it thinks you just hit the iginition switch. the turbo pools up really slow, but only sometimes, usually when i want to go. it takes about 2-3 seconds (not exagerating) to reach 5# of boost after that its about normal, sometimes it just jumps right up to 15# with no problems or complaints. The car needs a TON of stuff to be where i want it.

so that leaves me with 2 options, spend the money and fix everything the way i want it, good option if i had the money. or sell the car and find a better starting point. I've been looking for a lower milege gn but haven't really found much, but i'm still looking.

what other cars are there that have somewhat comparable performance for lest say $10k ish? I've been looking for a 95 bmw m3, but thats expensive and i'm not a yuppie. maybe a typhoon or syclone, but thats a lot of money for something thats comparable to a gn. possably a supra, but i don't want a japanise car, just because i don't like them. i was thinking about a chevelle or other old muscle car, but i want something reliable enough to drive everyday. what else is out there?

Just buy an economy car to drive everyday and fix the GN. When I drove mine from 95-99 with no problems. But parts are getting $$$ for a dailydriver. If you have the money, buy the 03 cobra. :D

Get a lightweight car of your choice, put in a big smallblock stroker with carb and mechanical fuel pump, add a 4-6 spd, some healthy gears, and away you go to high 11's low 12's all day long. HTH.

1. Tune up and perhaps a new chip.

2. Powermaster system back on the car or a vacuum cannister.

3. Kibans replacement power steering hoses.

4. New radiator recore or new hoses.

All that for under $700 and you aren't driving a POS Ford or Honda.

Problem is maintenance and not the car, since it's old and obviously been neglected a bit.

No reason it should die when you hit the gas.... ever..... that's the reason we drive these things the GO pedal. :D

Sounds like you need a car that doesn't need any maintenance, preventive or otherwise. Can't help ya there. :(

That's what I was thinking.

THese cars are old, and if aggressive preventative maintenance isn't done, you will have the problems you describe.

I replace things *before* they fail or "need" replacing, and have minimal problems.

thats what really bugs me about the car, its been taken care of like you wouldn't believe. i have recepts opon recepts and a full list of every part thats been replaced and when it was replaced. the car has beally been taken care of, and i've been keeping an eye on things the might be looking to take a crap hoping to prevent this.

It just died on me again tonight, this time i was paying a lot more attention to what happend. I got on it, nothing too hard, just a quick run up to 30 then backed off the throttle, i was driving at about 30 for about 5 seconds and then it just died on me again. i'm thinking it might have something to do with the fuel pump? I was pretty low on gas too, about 2-3 gallons so that could be behind it.

after making a threat to the car, and changing the water pump and pressure hose its been running pretty good, no recent problems. i'm starting to like the car again. but is there a reason for the 0-5# turbo lag it has, shouldn't it go from 0-5 just as fast as 5-10 and 10-15?

Exhaust leaks will slow the turbo spool

Have you made any progress on your exhaust leak?

Come on down to COS, we can use Tlink for your tune about any time you can come down. :)

My TA49 spooled slow like a larger turbo when I first got my car and had the stock converter. This altitude plus a possible exhaust leak definitely can contribute to that. A little looser than stock converter should wake things up. I think I went too loose now my car gets no traction even on drag radials but it definitely spools now:eek:

When you go to sell it you will pay even more for those problems than if you spent the $$ and fixed it yourself. I personally wouldn't buy a car with those problems unless it was a steal. Always fix a car before you sell it.

As much as we hate to admit it, these are old cars now. Stuff is going to wear out. Unless it has been replaced, all the parts on the car are 16 years old!

Even if the car has low miles, age takes it's toll, things dry out, wear out or just plain fail.

At this point with a 16 year old car, things are going to fail, replace them before you are stuck on the side of the road.

Good luck,

Mark F.

87 GN 11.9 @ 115

Well, let's see. There's '86 T-types, '86-'87 gn's, '89 tta's, and for a lot more, '87 gnx's. There, I think that about covers it.
Personally, I have had a lot of high performance cars over the years, (lots of years), and for my money, if I were you, all kiddiing aside, I would either fix up the '87 t-type, or I would step up to the plate a little and get another '86-'87 gn/t-type, or maybe even a tta, but never would I be gn/t-typeless. I have had 4 '86-'87 gn/t-types, and I am looking for my fifth to replace my daily driver, an '87 t-type with 115 K miles on it. There is nothing else out there, FWIW & IMHO.
Kidding aside, good luck in whichever route you choose.

here lately its been having less problems, i'll probably keep it unless i find another gn-ttype at a great deal to replace it, and then i WOULD replace what is broke, i'd have a hard time selling someone a car that i know is broken.

the exhaust still has a few holes in it, i'm just going to go for a new exhaust soon anyways. I'm also still working on getting a lap top lined up then i'll buy turbo link of my own and try to straighten some problems up.

what is the stock stall? i was thinking about going to something a little bit higher but i don't know what i'm at right now. (no tach)
