I have been plagued by this problem for about 6 months now...i started getting the code 44 (fuel mixture too lean) when my car was nearly stock with stock injectors and turbo and such...well i always thought it was the injectors that were just clogged and causing the fuel pressure to spray lean constantly...

what happens is...i start the car...let it warm up...then after about 60 seconds the car's idle will suddenly change and drop...like it's wanting to die then it goes normal idle again but the ses light comes on...i checked it with turbolink and it throws me a code 44 and the computer goes into open loop...now when i tap the gas the light goes off immediately and the car goes back into closed loop...

it will repeatedly do this when i let the car idle for exactly 60 seconds...

sooooooo i changed my injectors to the 50's...messed with various fuel pressures...chips...changed the fuel filter....etc. and still i get the same thing everytime...what is causing this??? i am running out of ideas...i don't think i have a bad ecm because everything else looks normal...car runs great and everything it's just this is annoying...any suggestions???

dead O2 sensor can cause that.
ie one contaiminated with silicone.
I'd try a used funky O2 first to make sure that was it.

If you got some silicone in the system it might kill another O2, is why I say a functional junker.

I too had a code 44 a short time ago........There are 2 things to check......the o2 sensor...then the MAF........if you take both screens out of the MAF without the chip be programed for a screenless MAF, you will also get code 44.which was my case...Good Luck

I had the EXACT same problem with identical symptoms, etc. Confusing things further was that it started happening not long after an injector, chip and turbo swap. I initially thought it was the chip, but....

Here's what fixed it:

I decided to change my O2 sensor just for sh*ts and giggles. I took out the original O2 (original to the car) and noticed a hairline crack in the sensor where it screws in. Changed it, and my code 44 went away.

You wouldn't happen to have a volt booster or similar device hooked to the TPS would you? I recently installed one and unplugged it, then re-plugged it. I started to get the code 44 as well. Removed the Volt booster and code 44 went away.

Betcha you have a bad ground somehere.
The O2s only output a few miilamps in current and they can be masked easily.

guys i have changed the o2 sensor numerous times...i am now running a heated o2 kit that is very new and i still get a code 44...

i have the ls1 maf sensor and it's done this with several other maf sensors as well...i have both screens in my ls1 maf sensor along with the cold air kit from mark heuffman....

i register 5 GPS at idle for the MAF
i have tps set at .42 at idle
iac counts are between 20 and 40 at idle...

i always get o2 milivolt counts varying between 80-200 at idle but then there are never any o2 COUNTS...it always reads 0 no matter what o2 sensor i have (this is only at idle of course)

my header is cracked but just surface cracks and no leaks whatsoever...i have new plug wires and plugs...i mean sheesh what else is there...my car is weird

I have the same problem. Its been about 1 year all in all. My header has been cracked and re-welded 4 times. each time it's sealed my code 44 goes away. Its when the crack opens up that I get the 44. Try getting it welded, I am sure that will fix er up!
Good luck

My Code 44

Hey, my car has been running a little tough for a while. It'll act fine, then on a hot day it'll feel like the gas kicks out for a second, it stumbles, then goes fine again. It's done this intermittently, without throwing a code, and it finally threw one last week while I was idling down after a trip. I've gotten it again, and figured I'd throw an O2 at it, but can the O2 cause the highway occasional bog too? I've got a minor header crack, but have for almost 3 years with no problems yet. Basically, the car is acting like a bad maf, but I've got the LT1 and translator in there, and everybody else's experiance is that they're bulletproof. Suggestions? Thanks
