Tonight my dad was out walking our dog (Max) and one of these little bastards was in his path so what did he do?? He took a big bite out of it! My dad said it happened so fast he didn't even have a chance to pull him away.... These toads down here are poisonous so of course he started to foam at the mouth and I knew the first thing we had to do was try and flush his mouth out with water so we get the hose and flush it, but his gums appeared to be getting red (which is another bad sign that I heard of) so at this point we get him in the car and head to the 24 hour animal hospital.... The Vet said it's a good thing we didn't wait too long because the poison can travel pretty quickly through the gums into the blood stream and then right to the brain where it causes them to seizure.... Well after they gave him a shot to calm him down they flushed and cleaned his mouth/gums out again with water (to get rid of any of that poison) and gave him some sort of medicine to fight against this poison and now thankfully he is at home with us doing okay (just a bit tired from the medicine).... The Vet was telling me that the smaller the dog (weight wise) the worse it is and the easier it is for them to get these seizures which can cause brain damage or death! Luckily for us Max is not the smallest dog ('bout 70-75lbs) so because he is bigger it would take longer for the poison to travel through his blood stream and into his brain to cause a seizure.... While we were there at the Vets they had a smaller dog (not sure what breed) that also got a toad and the poor little thing was having seizures:(

I figured I would post this on here for any of the dog owners that may not know about these toads......

Gotta get some sleep and now at least I'll be able to sleep knowing my buddy is okay:)

Yep had a friends dog do the same thing, problem was it was too late and it was a bulldog.

That sucks!:(

SOunds like he went into some kind of anaphalatic sp? shock. Did they give him epinephrine? Our house is surrounded by toads and my dogs are very curious.

My son's labrador got bit by a rattler two years ago. Fortunately, we got her to the vet and with anti venom shots she lived, although never quite the same. Bill at the emergency vet..$2,000. No question, we didn't hesitate even at that price, but wow!

We have a pond in my front yard that we put in about two years ago, and those little pos's are all over the place. There are about 20 of them. Have you heard some of the noises those things make? The little ones make this really really high pitched sound that sounds like a mix between a little girl screming and a whistle. Its really ear piercing. I hate those things.

It's always good when you witness it happen so that you know exactly what to tell the vet. My dogs are always playing in the tall grassy areas where rattlers like to hang out and I know that if they got bitten out there we probably wouldn't see any signs until it was too late....and even then we couldn't be sure of what was wrong.

A good way to check if its a bufo frog is to give it a lick. If you start seeing things then get the dog to the vet! ;)

Glad to hear the dog's ok!

Bishir, I'm not sure if it was epinephrine (it could be for all I know)? He got a few shots and the Vet was telling us what they were, but I can't remember the names....

Neil, yup I know the sound.... It's enough to wake the dead!

Brad, I'll pass on licking it.... FWIW, the Vet said that the Buffo toad is the worse, but all of the toads have this white $hit that they release through these glands (they look like warts) that are on their back....

Maybe tonight before I walk him I'll go outside and play golf with some toads:D ;)

every season my red nose gets 2 or 3 of them fu<kers....fortunately I've learned to watch him every time he goes out during frog season.....but yet my female could care less about them??

Yeah, I would and did keep my dogs away from any toads. They are nasty little toxic creatures we don't need around us.
Hey 86brick, use a PW or 9-iron. That way you get some good elevation and watch and hear them splat when they come back down. Just make sure you wash them after your round!;)

Toads (Cane toads actually) are a really big problem up in the northern part of australia. They were introduced in the 30's here and like many non-native species, have been rapidly spreading/destroying the country. They're poisonous as well, so much so that if an animal bites them the animal (unless it's larger) is usually pretty bad off in a few minutes, if not dead. There are tons around, the highways are covered with dead toads......
