i hear ya, my girlfriends kid is 5 years old, he got a tv, vcr, and friggin playstation in his room. i didnt have my own tv till i graduated highschool. what the hell is he gonna be driving when he graduates highschool , a vette.

SPOILED BRATS!

When I was a KID I walked, rode my bike or took a bus all over ARLINGTON mass..

I started working at 14 & saved enough money to buy a $700
65 GTO back in 1976.

I worked sometimes 2 jobs.

Just recently my son started walking home from school after being drivin to & from for 6 years.
He is interested in $$ but doesn't get anything outta me.
I lined him up with 2 mowing jobs. Since the the $$ is coming his way now he can't wait to cut both places.

I told him to make up flyers $15 for any lawn up to 1/2 acre.
He won't do it..

They obviously have more these days, but that doesn't make them spoiled. I had more than my Dad did, but that didn't necessarily make me spoiled then either. I think that the problem is that with more and more TV, internet, and all the other stuff that kids miss out on being a kid. They are thrust into a more complex life earlier on than the rest of us were, not to mention being indoors instead of outdoors. The more "new" things (internet, cable, video games etc) that come out, a kid needs his imagination less and less for entertainment and simple developmental "play". Some new things are beneficial and provide new outlets for kids, but some aren't suitable until a certain age. That's where the parent comes in. If you think a "thing" is detrimental to the child, you don't introduce it, or you take it away unti they are ready for it. Technology doesn't spoil a child, poor parental judgement does.

Atari, bah! How about Pong? I didn't have a TV or VCR until I was in my 2nd year of college, but my son's 3 and has one of each (when we allow it to be on, tapes only, no cable).

When I was a kid there were'nt drug dealers on every corner or kids killing each other in school.
I think it's a whole lot tougher to be a kid now than thirty or fourty years ago.

Well, I am 30 so this article really has my generation in mind. I agree and disagree with you, since the article isn't talking about being a kid 30 or 40 years ago, it's about growing up in the 80's, which I did. There were drug dealers, but not nearly like today. We also had far better toys, cartoons, and TV shows. But I didn't have a cell phone when I was 16 (or younger), nor did I have a car waiting for me, like many kids today do. One thing today that's better for sure is the girls are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay hotter than they were 12-15 years ago. I wish girls were that hot and dressed as slutty as they do today when I was in high school in 1988! :D

Thats sort of true, but around me only girls in the junior high dress like that to get theyre popularity up i guess. when my girlfriend was in high school she never dressed "slutty"
Anyways not a very smart thing to post on this forum, many guys have kids!

I could care less who has kids or not, what's true is true. If you have kids doesn't mean you are dead. :) One guy at work says he likes it when his daughter brings her friends over the house! Now that's pushing it a bit, but it's still funny! :)

I have to disagree with ya buddy. Piercings look great on girls, and make me soooooooooo...well, you get the idea. :) Also, girls didn't dress as skimpy as they did in 1987. They didn't enen wear thongs back then. Today, every young girls wears one, unless she is strange or from some small town where they weren't introduced yet.

Kids in the 70's had it easy. You could make a good living off of a high school diploma, and needed a 65 average to get into College. Nowadays you need a HS diploma to be a garbage man, and good luck getting into anything other than a technical school or community college with anything less than an 80% average for grade 12.

Hehehe, Pong. :) Actually, I prefer the older games to todays games. Not ancient 70's games like Pong, but classic 80's games like Zelda, Metroid, and Punch-Out!! :)
