My friend owns an 85 T-Type and just recently has been getting a loud Knock from the engine. At first i herd a knock just like it but it sounded like it was his cat rattleing around, but now he tells me its coming from the engine internally. He has had some problems eith the car like his MAF is probably all screwed because the small screen that goes in front of it is smashed, and for a while was driving around without it. But luckly i told him to put it back in even if it was all smashed. Also he has driven the car with out a filter for a day, and the car just idles like crap. My friend has had the car for about three months and really has gotten nothing but trouble from it. He's really waiting for the cash to go STAGEII aluminium but in the mean time i would lke to help him kept his TR alive since its his only ride to work. Any advice at this point will help thanks in advace guys:D :D go easy on the guy he a newbeee:rolleyes:

I'd first wanna ask him how many miles are on the car ? (could be his main or rod bearings)

Second, i'd get rid of the screen in the MAF if its loose or damaged. A tiny piece of it gets loose (you know how brittle they are) and bye bye turbo due to forgien object damage !!!

Ask me how I know !!!!

Can't hurt to remove the screen - as long as he's driving around with the air filter on it. It idle's like crap - maybe try the IAC reset procedure.....

No codes ?

well if its a loud knock in the motor(that kinada reminds u of a diesel motor..) most likely spun a bearing unless its up high and could be a rocker... your screen doesnt do a whole lot but decrease turbulence for the maf.... and restrict air flow... and if its damaged take it out.... gunna ruin the turbo. i would tell him to stop driving before the motor seizes up... and if hes been driving it still and he spun a main bearing he could trash the block... this could have happened if it had bad oil...

Check all the pulleys on the motor, if its not that and it really sound to be in the motor then drop the pan. I would say it might be the timimg chain or the oil pick up is dirty and you have a oil problem, maybe a rod or main if it sounds bad, drop the pan before it gets bad. If its the stock timing chain , out of three motors ive seen they were all bad.

My friend is still dirving it and he says that the sound use to just do it at idal now it does it all the time and even louder. he says its so loud that you cant even tell were its coming from top or bottom. Now when he revs it the knock goes faster even while driving. He cant tell what it is its gotten really loud and scary. I havent heard it myself but this is all info over the phone so any help will be appreciated. thanks :D

if its in the motor then he better park it or he will be real sorry soon if its getting that bad. Sonds to me like a rod is going , you dont want the rod taking any thing else with it . Drop the pan before its to late. I bet when the pan comes off the problem will be easy to see. check the oil pick up this is the starting piont.
