Let off gas to shift to OD?

I was getting a lot of hard shifting in all gears and flaring in the 2 -3 shift. Fluid level is good. Then I adjusted the TV cable and now its shifting nicer. But, now and before adjusting the cable I have always had to let off the throttle to get it to shift into OD.
I was going to change my filter and fluid, my buddy says that could do more harm then good. Never heard that before and he is no tranny expert, so I wanted to ask you guys if I should start by changing the tranny fluid and filter.
Oh ya, the tranny is stock(never rebuilt with 97k) with stock convertor and B&M cooler.

incorrectly adjusted TV cable will damage trans.Sounds like your trans has other issues with the flaring.Whats the fluid look like,any pan debri?

The fluid on the dipstick looks fine and doesn't smell. I know they sometimes smell burnt, but mine seems good. I think I am going to go ahead and change the fluid and filter next chance I get.
Is that B&M trick shift fluid any good? Or I got enough type F fluid also to do the job. The B&M stuff I got on sale a couple of years ago.

you adjusted your tv cable to raise the pressures in the tranny, therefore it's gonna shift later in every gear. the flare is due to another problem most likely....but adjusting your tv cable is a patch for it. i run the b&m trick shift in my car and i love the way it shifts with it and it doesn't eat the clutches as much.

Check your converter lock-up switch, I looked high and low even put a non bfr gov in to get it to shift at WOT ( I DO NOT RECOMMED THAT YOU DO THAT ) I talked to Art @ Art Carr on the phone and he said to try the look-up switch, it's in the pan so if you're going to have the pan off the switch is under 20 bucks you can get it from your GM dealer.

A thought I had at work last night - - > I put a V2 intake/intercooler setup on my '85. The setup relocates the throttle body after the turbo like the '86/'87's and I was told to just keep the TV cable in the position it was in and hook it up to the newly positioned throttle body. I have been working out the bugs and I never adjusted the cable because someone told me that it would be fine once I started run the boost levels I desired, but I think the tranny just went through to much hard shifting, while I was working the bugs out. And now it is showing some signs of abuse or old age. So, just recently, I got the car running good and it was still shifting hard so I adjusted the TV cable so it wouldn't shift as hard everytime. Was shifting hard at light throttle too. Now it shifts at light throttle the way it use too. I am not tranny expert but that is my inexperience estimate of what might have caused this 2-3 flare to come up. Does that sound like that could have caused it??
Since I have adjusted the cable I haven't been able to do any WOT test. Anyways...

Not sure how true it is but more then one speed shop owner told me B&M trick shift fluid is nothing more then type F! I use type F in mine and it seems to firm the shifts up just a little more then the Dex II. As far as your issue with changing the fluid you might as well do it. At 97K you did pretty good with a stock trans for these cars! So changin the fluid will either help it or really make issues come out. At least then you'll know!
