ok ill start, let me just say im at my wits end with this car and the bodyshop its at..i have no doubt that the car will end up looking mint, but enough is enough.

i droped the car off may 8th, he told me it would be 3 weeks. o ya before i forget, this is going to be a full resto, including whole car stripped to bare metal, all glass out, all new weather striping and window moldings. he garentees the quality will not change while i have i car.

ok back on track, i droped it off may 8th, told me 3 weeks, after a week of the car not moving i went down to talk to him and all he said was that they car would be done on time and not to worry. so after the 3weeks go by and its not done i talked to him again(even to this day i go down and check on the car every other day bc if i dont stay on top of him nothing will get done). so i go talk to him and tell him"yes i understand where ur coming from, this is a time consuming job when all u gotta do is put a hood and fender on that bmw x5 and get $4800" he just looks down at the ground so i said ok if i give u some money will that help the process and he says yes so i give him $2000. and he tell me 3 weeks u have my word

car sits for another 2.5 weeks then he finally hires someone to do the bodywork to the whole car. so he starts working on it and makes some progress. then quits and the bodyshop just kept telling me "ya hes been busy but hes gunna work nights on it" so the car sat for another month...finally get the guy he hired to finish the bodywork but now the car has to be brought to his shop so the guy can finish it...car sits for another few weeks before nething gets done to it....then when the mom n pop shop next store tells him ive been comin and peeking in the window to see if theres been ne progress, he tapes up the windows!!!!!!!1:mad: so cant see my own effing car:mad: so finally i tell the bodyshop that i talked to an attorney and he and the guy he hired finally get going on it.. slow progress but progress atleast.. and this happend about 3 weeks ago if im not mistaken...so currently the car minus hood, doors, decklid, spoiler r in black.. but he said there were a few fish eyes in some spots so hes gotta repaint parts. and today he tells me i need a new hood bc mine was cracked on the side(i saw the crack) and after welding it the gap for the hood to driver fender dont line up right... oyaa!! plus he still hasnt fixed the hole in the trunk or on the floor behind drivers seat..i totally forgot about those:mad::mad::mad: so anyways the 3 week paint job is taken 3 months and most of my summer:mad:

ok im done thank you for letting me vent.

fyi..otto if u read this this is the reason why the car is not been to your shop yet for a tune

Ive been getting 10-20k estimates:eek::eek:
Thats scary enough!

I feel your pain, I have yet to get mine painted.

I hear ya...I went through that pain. Mine spent 3 years @ the bodyshop. He gave me the same ol crap & excuses. People ask me why have you taken so long...when I tell them the seem to understand.

My 72 GS was in the body shop prison for 5.5 YEARS and never did get finished. sold it as a project, also had to sell the 525 BBB stroker at a 5K LOSS. thxto the body man.

Ya I've heard alot of storys about cars at the bodyshop for years. But it's not like I told him to take his time. I told him I needed the car by spring ad he said 3 weeks

mine has been being re-done for one year exactly now. it is in my garage, i'm doing the work. i've been telling everone that it would be ready next week, for 6 months now. and i know better, i've got about 5-7 years over bodyshop experience.

but it should look good, every panel has been off. all the seam sealer replaced. over half of it stripped to metal.

i've done one good block sanding to it, got one more to go. it'll be done anyday now, ......i hope.

i dropped mine off on june 16th, guess what its still there, they only have the front bumper off and the hood stripped. i didnt need any body work and im way behind. i still have gaskets, rear main seal, torque converter and valve springs in the trunk. not to mention a new intercooler and shocks sitting in my garage. every time i stop by they just say they have been busy and didnt get to it yet. really how long does it take to strip a car and paint it.. i figured 2 months would be a reasonable amount of time:mad:

i think the biggest problem, is for a shop to work on one car full time, it would cost a literal fortune.

Same here. My bedroom and basement r full of BRAND NEW parts waiting to be put on. All parts r brand new never installed front air dams, recovered front/rear seats, test pipe with e-cutout, valve springs, Wideband a/f,trans temp gauge, brand new sun visors, brand new m/t et streets

Yup, a resto like mine was about 200hrs worth of work. If to guys were working on it that's 100ea and in a 40 hr week that less then 3 weeks. So a resto in 1 month in very possible. Just seems like most bodyshop owners r unaware of the proper way to run a business

I've been

around the car scene for over 50 yrs, and have had my share of nice cars..Many of which were body work/paint deals.
I've YET to meet, work with, ONE SINGLE body guy that wasn't short on chlorine in the gene pool!
Some "truisms":
**The first false promise in your deal for 3 weeks is exactly that, 3 weeks!
**Secondly, ANY b/s that relies on collision work, is going to JERK U AROUND!
**Third, every one I've dealt with, always "finds" more work that needs to be done, redone. This allows a price increase, and reasoning behind missed completion dates.

I'm now on my way to the b/s that has my 55. It was a 2 mo deal, [reasonable], to first prime. That turned into 6 mo.
Once the prime was done, it was 60 days to completion. I am, this VERY day, at 14 mo's and still no paint.

Sure am glad this is my "last go around" w/ building cars!:D

If the guy won't let you see YOUR car, take a sheriff deputy w/ you, and have a prayer meeting"... Are you sure it's even still there?
If he's that shady, keep a CLOSE eye on the business. He could fold up in the middle of the nite, and disappear.

Bottom line: Go get the car!

A couple

i think the biggest problem, is for a shop to work on one car full time, it would cost a literal fortune.

comments..
1. A collision shop relies on fast turn, average quality. Thus a "resto" is an intrusion into their routine.[Collision shops pay the body, painters on a commission basis].
2. Don't think for 1 minute that a GOOD "paint job" costs $3k....[Paint/clear/hardener/reducers for my 55 cost nearly $2800!!]
3. Deal ONLY w/ a shop that specializes in resto work. Once you decide to do this, look at REAL costs. Reduce everything to writing.
Strip, repair rust, paint w/ quality materials, etc, you are at 3-4X the collision shop price.
Custom shops do exsist, and the good ones do well on the bottom line. My bud has 1, and has a 1 car at a time policy.[Just he and his dad]. He was out nearly 15 mo's when I went w/ the current guy. [Custom only, does NICE work, not well trained in running a business the right way!]

THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH @ the body shop!

Well said chuck.

Strangely enough the gay I got the car flat bedded out of his shop and sent back to the original bodyshop the guy was taking all his tool boxes out of it like he was leaving:rolleyes:

I've been there every step of the way while work was being done. And all bs aside they r doing the perfect job. Zero corners being cut. It's a friend of a friend so he's only getting $6000 out of me for this full resto  so maybe that's y he "can't find time" to work on it

That pretty much

explains it!
He got "upside down" when he quoted the $6K..

Good luck!

lots of folks should do some homework, B4 they decide on a shop.
A visit or a call to the local paint store will get a pretty good case of "sticker shock". If it's too good to be true, it likely isn't.!
The metallic blue on my 55 is $420/gallon. [PPG] Red formulas are OUTTA SITE!

He told me he'd have $1500 ish in paint and clear. IMO if he looks the car over like he did n gives a quote then he's obligated to do it for that much. I understand that sometimes ur gunna find hidden spots once it's down to bare metal but that's life

One of the shops i worked for in the early 90's was similar. We did a cobra kit car, it had already been put together, stripped down to just the body. For making sure it was flat(not wavey) and painting it, and buffing it to a perfect mirror shine, i was told it was a $14,500 job. took about 2 months. Anyone care to guess how much of the work was done by me, and then how much I got paid for it? This was a 1-2 car at a time shop, painted a lot of motorcycle gas tanks all the time also. The guy did good work, always had a waiting list, and was always broke (not sure if it was his wife, or drugs - if he was on drugs he kept it hiden very well.)

How much would you pay for a roller. Perfect paint, I mean the best paint and trim, better than new. How much would that car be worth? No interior, wheels, engine or tranny. 5k-10k, maybe 20k? Reason that i ask is I just cant seem to get myself to put a 10-20k paint job on a buick grand national. What will the car be worth after a 10k paint job? I can answer that, 11 Thousand maybe. And Im speaking of the car that I have, so its hard to spend that much on paint and body. Hot Rod shop prices are drivin by customers who say " Get it done, price is no option" and it leaves no place for guys who want a good paint job for 2500. IMHO.....

Im not bitter, just an observation from a guy that has owned a few, sold a few, and love cars! Its just a friendly debate:D:D

With my 70 GTO I needed my fender repainted.

MISTAKE #1 Never go to a shop that does insurance work. (THEY WILL ALWAYS PUT YOUR CAR TO THE END OF THE WORK LINE)

I asked him to put the car inside at night. He never did

After 1 week of seeing the car sit there I went in got the KEY and said goodbye.

I went to a classic resto shop & 3 days it was done.

I'm with you. There is absolutely no reason it should cost $10-20k to paint a car a single color. I understand it takes a lot of time to block it and prep it...blah blah blah...and the materials are expensive...whatever. I could see it costing that much if there's a bunch of rust repair, new sheet metal etc, but not to strip it to bare metal and paint it.

That's exactly why i bought the few things i needed to do my own car. i was quoted "at least 10 grand, and the 2 shops i found to use where both 6-8 months out- before they could get started.

but if i was doing paint work for a living, it'd be the quick turn around budget jobs. i can do ( well i used to could - lots of things have changed since then) some of the best paint work that could be done. but with all the extra steps, materials, etc... i don't think i could make any money at it, unless the customers really have no budget. plus, working on the same car day in and day out gets very old and quick.
