i need to get my 84 T trans rebuilt, but the $$$ just aren't there right now. the local boneyard has a 2004r out of an 88 Caprice that they will sell me for $250. i don't need a lot of life out of it- just drivable for the rest of the year and maybe a bit next year. i know the shift points won't be right on and all that, but if i hot rod it a bit, will it kill the trans fast? and will the wiring for the TCC be the same?
oddly enough, the boneyard computer doesn't list the different trans codes- so if you ask for a trans for a GN or Monte SS or whatever, you might end up with a Caprice or generic G body trans.
a 2004r is a 2004r is a 2004r.
nice, eh?

novaderick, its mr.4 speed from the "other" website
anyway...

if the plug for the TCC is different than your GN,it can easily be changed.I went thru this went I put a Monte SS unit in my 87 GN for a shortwhile.
I bought the correct plug from www.ckperformance.com dropped the pan and swapped it out.

Can't speak for longevity about the Caprice unit,it all depends on its internal condition.A fluid/filter change would be the minimum I would do.
Good luck

the ct code from the caprice is pretty good although it will not make 5200 rpm upshifts @wot.the police caprice version is even better from the later 9c1 caprices.contrary to peoples belief it was used up to 89 90 in 9c1 trim ny and canadian police cars with 3.42 and 3.73 final drives.it also had a pink stripe on the valve body but no third pressure switch with plug or cap.many have fought with me over the validity of this info as it is not in gm print.however i was building them when converted to taxis thrus from 90 thru 94 and saw plenty.they also had a large tv plunger with no part throttle kickdown port in the sleeve.code was also ct but different from the regular caprice with 3.08 final drive.expect 4500 to 4800 rpm wot upshifts.

thanks for the info. i really don't care about the WOT shift point- i just want to be able to drive the car again, as i'm moving about 100 miles away, and don't feel like renting or borrowing a trailer to take it up there. i just need something to hold me over until the BQ trans can get reguilt.
i find it odd that with so many different variations of this trans out there, that the boneyard (a BIG nationally known one at that) doesn't know anything about the different codes or that not all of them are the same. hell, maybe i should go dig thru their whole inventory and see if i can score some of the good trannies.

ok, got the trans. it is a KTF trans.
what kind of stall speed can i expect with the converter- will it make the car a total dog?

its usually a 1300 or 1500 stall with that .what is the code on the converter
