Today my wife and I went to a fire safety and prevention class. It was an eye opener to say the least. We learned some very important life saving information.

Did you know that the common smoke detector will fail to give you an early enough warning 55% of the time. That means it will save your families life 45% of the time. There is a fairly new detector technology out there called photo electric detectors. The NFPA says you should use both photo and ion detectors since they detect different types of fires.

Another thing to do to help save your life and your family is keep a 5 lb fire extinguisher in you bedroom.

Maybe I am a worry wart but thought I would share this info with everyone I know. Maybe it will save someone's life! Watch the video below to see the smoke detector comparison.

is there a situation where the ionization technology is better? i.e. if all of my detectors are photo, is this better or worse than dual?

The ion detectors do better with open flame faster burning fires. The photo version is better with smoldering fires. The smoldering fires can catch you while you are sleeping and kill you with asphyxiation or smoke inhalation while you sleep right through it. There is another detector out there that detects rapid heat rise.

Yes the photo detectors have been around a few years but the information about the failure rate with ion detectors hasn't been made into a big enough deal. Think about it this way, would you want brakes that failed 55% of the time? Now say a car company did have a car that had brakes with that kind of failure rate wouldn't the media be all over it? Why not smoke alarms? Most people including myself have had a false sense of security for many years.

Good stuff. I just checked. Mine is a photo electric.

Thanks

Don't forget the carbon monoxide detectors as well, they cost a bit more but also help save lives.

Have a fire extinguisher in both the bedroom and near the kitchen and near the carport/garage.....this has saved me once before....Had my old truck catch fire once under the carport that is connected to the house..was a gas fire, could have easily caught the house on fire but luckily there is a fire extinguisher right at my back door into the carport, put it out fast enough where the wires were barely melted where the gas was all over them.
For that matter, make sure you have one in your car also!

Gas leak detectors are another good device to have as well.

Ditto, I almost lost my family in December 09 do to a leaking heat exchanger on our furnace. Spend the money to have a detector on every level of the house.

We were minutes from being gone.....
