How much does a line lock typically cost and how much time is involved in installation for someone like me who has done double flair fittings maybe twice in his life?
TIA

Line lock solenoid from Summit was about $40. Rent a double flair tool or buy one from Harbor Freight for $10. Buy a couple fittings to connect the line lock into the brake line. I am guessing the install will take about 1/2 hour, bleeding the brakes will take an hour or so at least, and running the wiring to a switch inside the cabin may take another hour.

Thanks. Do you usually install the switch in the ash tray? I better get my plate ordered from Mark. Its getting busy in there

linelock

Best location for switch is just under the "T" handle of the shifter...easy to get at when you wrap your hand "over" the handle with the thumb on the detent switch ... then you can dangle a finger onto the l-lock set/release button.... have also seen the button on steering wheel but damned if I'm gonna have a power supply wire twistin on every steering turn.

If you mount the line lock under the car you can wire it pretty quickly. The power wire come up through the shifter cable boot to the ashtray, then through the console to plug into the accesories terminal. Very easy.

Here is a good pic and thread info on mounting the line lock after the prop valve: http://www.turbobuick.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48167

That's how I am about to install mine. I bought most of the parts off Cotton, the rebuildable lock is $120 and less than $10 for the rest of the parts you need. I borrowed the double flare kit and line bender, which you will need also. Cotton also sells the wheel cylinders and soft rear shoes. I bought the ashtray 5 switch panel from Buick from Hell for the line lock switch, www.buickgn.com with the engraving and it looks real nice.

UNGN where do you have your switch mounted?

I wanted my line lock completely hidden so the switch is in the ashtray. When a tech inspector sees stuff like a line lock, etc. he is more prone to ask you "what does this car run?" If he never asks the question, and you happen to run a mid 11 (How did that happen?) you can play dumb and run another before he tells you to park it. Otherwise, he'll tell you to "park it after the first 11" while he's teching your car.

We so need an IHRA 1/4 mile around here.

I take it you are "rollbar free"
What does IHRA allow before a rollbar or cage is needed? 11.0?

Ken,

How do the inexpensive line lock units fail?

They are just a solenoid activated shutoff valve. Does the solenoid fail from heat? Does the seat or seals go out in the valve assembly?

Summit usually sells decent items. A year or two of life is OK with me...as long as it performs decent right up till the end. What is the failure mode?

I've seen one that just failed by sticking open and wouldn't activate (although it buzzed and heated up! :))

I've seen one other fail partially stuck closed, which caused the brakes to be dragging and slow to release.

Had mine for about 10 years as well ... never any problems and I think it was about $105 or so (plus a few bucks for the necessary adapters).
