The last time I made a long distance vehicle transaction was about 6 years ago. How does everyone do it these days? What arrangements are made in regards to transfer of title and monies?

Deposit to hold car for real. Cash or cashier's check when car is picked up with title exchange.

Yes, but what if this is a long distance transaction where you won't be the one to pickup the car?

That's risk you have to assess unfortunately. If this is a normal type car, there are services out there to look at the car for you for a fee. At least I've heard of them anyway.

In my limited experience with third party escrow services that you mention, most sellers don't like it because monies aren't released until the car gets to the buyer. Not to mention problems that could arise if the buyer has buyers remorse upon delivery. In the case of my GN it took about a month to get the car from Florida to Hawaii. The seller refused to wait that long for his money after releasing his car. Can't say I blame the guy. The other thing about escrow services is not all of them are legit in which case both the seller and buyer gets screwed.

What I've done in the past is, I did a simple background check on the seller to make sure I was not dealing with some career criminal. Lol. Then I sent him half the money via fedex. Upon receipt and clearing the bank (which could take days) the seller fedex'd the title to me. Then when the transporter came to pickup the car, the transporter called me to confirm it was loaded on his truck and I sent the other half of the money (via fedex). All of this shit is very risky to say the least and neither of us felt entirely comfortable with the process but this sharing of risk was the only way this transaction was going to happen. I'd rather not repeat this process again for obvious reasons and was hoping others would chime in with a better, and safer, way of handling long distance transfer of monies and title.

Shoot me a PM and I can give you a call to discuss it if you'd like. I've sent over $100,000 across the border to buy Turbo Regals, TTA's and Sy/Ty's over the years...usually sight unseen. And the only car I ever got burned on was one I picked up in person and didn't follow the protocol I did for all the others. You're not going to like what you hear, but it will help minimize risk. Good luck.

Have him list the car on eBay give u item # buy it now and everyone is protected.

Idk but what ever it is to me its worth it. Especially if you're not seeing cars in person.

I don't disagree. It just wouldn't have worked in my case since I was dealing with and older person who was not computer literate. Otherwise its one way to minimize exposure.
