I would guess if the previous owner{s} abused the car to this extent, more problems will surface. Keep in mind that with 20K units produced in '87, more than a few of them ended up in the hands of uncaring individuals, to put it nicely. These cars used to be a favorite of drug dealers and coyotes, running drugs and people accross the Mexican border.
Or maybe some white kid in the burbs bought it off of grandpa and thought it would be cool to "customize" it.
I've seen lots of cars like this, my experience has shown that it's not limited to a certain race or "monkeys".
