I'm planning to look at an 84 GN this week. The seller said one of the issues it has is an exhaust leak at the manifold. Would this be something as simple as a gasket or likely to be a more serious problem. How can I tell just by looking and listening to it?

He also said the timing is off and the headliner is falling. It's an 84 GN w/100k miles, he's asking $6500. Body looks clean from the pictures, and it's all stock.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks. :D

You can buy a decent 86 or 87 for that kind of money and have a much better car to start with.

You're probably right. I'm not in a hurry, but I'm not finding a lot for sale in TX under $10k. I'd probably rather hold out for an 86 or 87.

I like the 84's; but the seats are the coolest part; and are usually rags at 100,000.

Wait for the right car. You will be glad you did.

I paid $8k for the car in my sig with a fresh motor/trans, and $4500 for the 87 I had before it.

Even if some work is needed to be 100%, an 86/87 car is a much better foundation to work with than an 85-older car.

If you can avoid T-tops, that would help too.

Just wait for the right deal to come along and you won't be sorry.

Maybe it would help to post a WTB ad in the classified section.

84 gn

I own a 84 gn and have owned it since Feb. 1984, purchased new. Great car, receive complements all the time. Car was a daily driver for twenty years and the seats are in perfect condition. I also own a 87 "T" and turbo Trans-Am. If I had to give any of them up, the 84 would be the last to go. 84 has 104000 miles on it.

I had two ’84 GNs. I sold them when I moved to a smaller place; and wouldn’t have a way to store them. The 87 T didn’t rank as high; and spent the night outside for a couple of years.

I’ve got a little more room now; and I’m starting to look for one again. Just no time to get out and see them.
