KCIR Sale Leaves Area Racing Fans Angry | FOX4KC Kansas City

From what I've gathered from other sources, is that the track owners were basically "forced" into selling the track. The track, which had opened in May 1967, was the target of complaints by those who live near the track, albeit some saying the track was built before the houses went up.

It's also believed since the Missouri senator owns 27 acres of land near the track, she was behind it's closing in an attempt to up the resale value of her land.

I guess we can go ahead and count on a huge increase in street racing?

That sucks...
There is a new track opening in Wellsville MO this spring (Mid America Raceway Park ) and Gateway is rumored to be reopening as well.

Wellsville is probably a good 100 miles from where I'm at. Looks like Gateway is in St. Louis, that's even farther. I'm in mid central MO between KC and Columbia.

I read on the internet from a few years back, they were trying to open a new track in Columbia, but I don't see anything more for it.

There's tons of farm land all around where I'm at. We have a few circle tracks around here but no drag strips. And we have a military installation here and the University Of Missouri, both full of young bucks with I'm sure a need for speed.

That's a shame. Same thing happened here. We're down to two tracks, both about 2 hours away.

Phoneguy, can you provide any additional information about the new track in Wellsville, MO?

google mar raceway park. There are a couple forums dedicated to it. It is actually near montgomery city - maybe tem miles off highway 70 and hwy 19. Last I heard they broke ground last month - should be up and running next year - 1/4 mile track.

Here is the location I found.

To get to the track grounds: I-70 to HWY. 19 (Wellsville exit), get on the south service road going west from Hwy. 19, go about a mile, and you are there! This is 35 miles west of the Hwy.40-61 and I-70 interchange (Wentzville, MO.) As an additional note, Gateway International Raceway will also reopen for the 2012 racing season.

Sounds even better - Can't wait for it to be open!

Still too far from where I'm at, but I did hear from another party, that they are planning to let the track finish out this years events, weather permitting. Which is funny because they have been saying this past Sat's races were the last ones.

Just heard on the news tonight the city has officially bought the track and the surrounding land. KC say hello to increased street racing.

Yeah...so I hear Claire McCaskill, the Sandy and Cindy Kemper family and Cindy Circo are behind the closing.

you guys going saturday?

If it doesn't rain, like I hear they are forecasting (60% chance...out of all days, the LAST day), I am going to try to make it. As a last hurrah. plus I'm going to take off my air filter and uncap the dump.

Now they will need to get another levy and higher tax rate to pay for the new street racing task force with 12 new cars 30 new officers and expanded jail, station and court house.

Think I'm kidding just wait.

I don't think you are kidding. I believe it. They obviously weren't thinking of an increasement of street racing when they decided to go along with this plan. Then again I wouldn't put it past any politician to prove just how dumb they are. On top of that, those who voted in favor of the track closing, if and when it's their friends or families are the victims of street racing due to a lack of a place to commence such speed, only then will it be poetic justice.
