Lost my keys is it possible to change out ignition without keys?

Thanks I was hearing I could not b / c I would the switch on to remove the old switch.

You have to remove the lock plate to expose a torx head screw. Once that screw is out, the lock will slide straight out.

Putting the lock plate back is a PIA without a second set of hands or building a bracket to hold it down.

slip the lock plate down, just setting on the spring then get that little ring on the shaft.... now find a socket that just barely fits the shaft but pushes the ring.

slam it down with a rubber mallet. done.

Got a buick dealer that mayb able to cut a key;if not I will have to change the switch .

A good locksmith can make an ignition or door key without removing the lock.

I think the last switch I bought was $13. No idea what a locksmith charges but I have to guess it's more than that.

It was in my Blazer (same switch as the GN) and it was amazing how much 'tighter' the new one was. GM locks seem to have a habit of getting sloppy after a few years.

Dealer is only going to charge me15.00 for key. Locksmith wanted 170.00. Switch is 12.00. No brainer.

Just buy a lock plate puller next time you go to the parts place, about $10.

You'll spend 3 hours taking the steering column apart when you could have a locksmith make you a key in 25 minutes. Also, what about door locks and trunk?

3 hours? Do you media blast and paint it when you take the steering column apart?

2 hexs for the horn ring. One nut for the steering wheel. One snap ring for the lock plate. One torx screw for the lock. Total cash outlay...about $14 and a brand new light lock with two new keys.

Not to mention the opportunity to inspect the turn signal cam and whatnot.

Door locks and trucks take the round key. No reason to screw with them.

You guys that are talking about getting a dealer to do it? I know nowadays you can walk into a dealership and give them your registration and they can give you the keys to the car. Is that really gonna work on a 26 yr old car???
I would be surprised. As for the door keys if you remove the trunk lock and take it to the locksmith they will be able to cut a key that matches the tumblers and it will cost you a few bucks.
