It is a full sized Ford van.

My friend was trying to back up a steep driveway with a heavy trailer and about 2,000 lbs on the trailer. The van was not powerful enough. He was WOT and the thing would not move. He gave it a couple of tries but as soon as the weight of the van hit the incline, the van just stopped.

Engine died and trans fluid started pouring out. Actually started a fire! Some of the fluid on the exhaust lit up! Good thing for fire extinguishers.

He said this happened once before and just like last time, after about an hour of cool time we just got in a fired it up. No leaks and seems fine.

The way fluid was pouring out even when the engine was not running really made me think a seal blew out but the only thing I can think of is that the converter started boiling the fluid and it boiled over and out a vent tube.

WTH happened? What are your bets for a catastrophic failure?

Hi Chris:

I don't know what trans is in it. Not even sure what year his van is. I think it is a late 90's, early 2000's, 3/4 ton Ford van.

It has about 130,000 miles on it. After two such events I'm thinking he will be lucky to see 150K with the same trans.

It could not have been a seal because it stops leaking after some cool down time - still don't believe we did not ride home in a tow truck.
