Hey guys I have a 86 GN Intercooled I have started work on and one of the things its doing is making this loud thunking noise. It sounds just like rod knock when the cars in park or drive if its in 1 or 2 seems to go away. The key will get stuck from time to time so have to push far up on the shifter to get the key out sometimes . I have played around with the shift cable a bit but cant seem to get it in the right spot to make this stop. Any one ever have this happen ?

Mine was the torque converter bolts. I figured that out after my car sat for a month before I had time to look at it. I was getting kind of depressed at the thought of an expensive engine rebuild because of a rod knock. I took off the torque converter inspection cover and the nut to one of the bolts were in it and the others were loose. Loctite!! Check them bolts, hopefully it is some thing very, very simple.

May also be a cracked flex plate.

As for the ignition key, there is a rod assembly that goes from the shift lever on the transmission, up to a lever under the hood. The lower end of the rod has an adjuster on it. IIRC, with the shifter in park the bottom of the rod gets pushed all the way up and the adjuster tightened.

If it was the TC or Flexplate shifting to 1st or 2nd wouldn't cause it to stop knocking/thunking when it is in Drive.
In L1 & D1 there're internal parts that are & are not engaged.
