In the same boat….im not rich so…..

I been looking for a thread like this, as you can see Im in need of a lil paint myself. Im going on deployment soon so hopefully i can save a few dollars to afford a decent paint job. Anybody know anybody who does affordable work in CA? Couple questions can you paint over my chrome bumper or should I buy a used black one instead. What all needs to be removed before you send the vehicle to the shop? And how do you get your engine bays looking so great? (REPAINT),(GOOD CLEANING)?

I did my own prep work bought my own paint and clear and paid very little to have a body/paint shop go through the work I did and spray it. Decent results. Like you I just needed paint not show paint. Just remove all of your trim, door locks/handles, quarter glass, etc. I removed all except i forgot my trunk lock and it got painted. Body/paint guys aren't too thorough/anal on the budget work.
I bought a paint brand called Transtar. Good paint/clear for the price.

What shop did you get your car painted at and what did it cost you if you don't mine me asking? I noticed your in Los Angeles area where I plan to get my car painted.

In about 95?? I stripped everything I could off the car, sanded it as best I could & masked off most of it. My business is painting & decorating & I personally have an HVLP, an Airless & an air brush but no spray booth. They did the final sand & laid enamel over the factory paint ( I Know!) but after a professional buff job for $1K total spent its a decent paint job. The car has seen 200 passes from back then so stone chips & rubber ect are part of the game. From 10 feet it still looks good with my little touchups every few years. Never win paint of the year but no peeling etc on it. It was worth the $800 for paint & $200 for the buff job for me. I guess it depends what you want from the paint job?
Altho, slipping the spray man $200 is a Good Idea! $200 for the guy masking & sanding & you will get a decent job for $1200
I will be at BPG so you can look for yourself.
