One of those, I should know the answer to this, question
When steel main caps are put on a V6 block, are they they machined or is the block machined?
Are the steel main caps any good if there removed for use so

The cap gets machined to fit the register. I don't understand the second question.
and then line bored which removes metal from the cap and hopefully removes as little as necessary from the block but usually atleast .003"
because they are fit and bored to the block they cant be moved to another block without fitting (to the sides which may need welding and then remove some from register face) and boring again

Machined to fit register
then line bored so the block pads will be machined moving the crank closer to the cam
yes you can move the caps to a different block ,registers may need to be welded and remachined.
with today labor cost new caps will not cost much more.
I fill your pain I have a junk block with 3 caps, that looks like a good short block and 14 bolt may not be as desirable as a 20 bolt but if its not hurt I would worse a set of new caps

You answered it with the first answer. The steel caps are able to be used elsewhere if the block there on had major, life ending failure.
I'm seeing if there is enough to warrant for us to take it to Bowling Green in May.
Thanks Kip
