I recently purchased an 87 T-Type and have in the stable a well modded GSX Eclipse. One of the first things I did with the Eclipse was to free up intake restrictions by removing the MAF and going to MAPS system, I currently have an AEM EMS on it.

What I want to know is how far can a T-Type go on with the stock MAF? My gut tells me get rid of it and immediately go to an engine management system. Pay up front for complete control while eliminating the MAF restriction. Estimated peak torque and Hp #'s would be cool.

The thing about going this route is there are no plug and play systems that I can detect for TR's. Can anyone rate on a scale of 1-10 the level of difficult involved in installing one of the F.A.S.T stand alones?

If you're going to throw money away, throw it my way ;)

Stock MAF setups have run into the mid elevens on TTA's and I'd suspect that means you can expect to run into the low 12's with the stock MAF.

I don't know abut FAST systems, you might try a post in that section of this board and see what the experts say.

The next best think would be a MAF Translator Plus, where you can control fuel and timing using a modern MAF.

a little better than that...........many have run in the 10's with a stock/aftermarket MAF....it is not really a restriction (particularly the 4") until you are making big power....600+

There's a new Product coming out, called the TranslatorPro, which allows converting a TR to a MAP system. It piggbacks on the stock ecm so is more cost effective for the Street Crowd, ie less then full out race cars. FullThrottle is going to be handling them.

Keep me straight Woody :D

I'll keep a look out for the translator pro in the mean time just stick with the stock MAF.

But generally speaking it seems preferable to upgrade the MAF to a larger unit instead of going engine management. Those who are on the engine management are considered all out race. Would that be a correct assumption?

Reason being it isn't necessary to get reasonable results with the MAF.

You could ditch the MAF all together and go with a proven setup like the MaxEffort ME-R (MAFless). It uses a modified stock ECM and 3 bar MAP sensor with NO MAF.

Time in my sig is on a Trans+....LS1 MAF...only reason I didn't go faster is that my turbo ran out of gas at 20PSI...just installed a 70GTQ...don't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to run mid 10's...the new Trans Pro looks interesting...I will probably try that to give me some more tuning ability...

The times for my "BlueCar" in my sig. are for a stock GM MAF with both screens and the lip removed.

The times for "SlowGray" were with an "aftermarket" MAF.

J Banning -

I will do research but just quickly does the Max Effort require special wiring requirements or does it plug right up?

I am new to Buick and I would like to move right to total engine management if I could. That is just more attractive to me.

NCTurbo - Just curious have you had to spend quite a bit of money in the chip department. That is what I am trying to avoid by going with a programmable ECM vs. Chip which has to be changed based on hardware changes.

FWIW...

I whole-hartedly agree with Mr. J Banning. MaxEffort ME-R (MAFless) The best set up to date combined with Mr. Yaklin's GREAT customer service. Our little "109" has been as fast as 145.95mph/9.35 with Steve's set up.:)

If you have the funds by all means do it.
