Hi guys,

Anyone bought or has used a Magnaflow catalytic converter? Better than Catco? Is Kirban's a Catco? What is the most free flowing catalytic for an 87 GN available?

Thanks,

A hollow one is the best flowing cat! I heard Randoms are good, I have one of Kirbans 3" catalytic converters that I use just for emissions testing, my other one is hollow.

I bought the Random Tech hi-flo one, never dyno'd. or raced with it.

I use hollow ones until emissions testing but the Random Tech. doesn't seem to hurt on the butt dyno. :p

Quiets the car down a bit too, not that much however.

I'd consider that one if it fits your setup (around 15" long) as it's supposed to be a race converter.

Available in 2.5" and 3" models.

the most free flowing catalytic converter is a 100 cell spun metallic catalytic converter. they do make 200, 300, and 400 cell spun catalytic converters. Spun metallic cats are even more high flowing then 'hi flow' cats. 'hi flow' cats use ceramic honeycomb substraights, where as these new 'metallic' cats use a SPUN metallic substraight with cells, the fewer the cells the more high flow it is. they are claimed to flow up to 40% more then a 'hi flow' cat.

many turbo guys have been able to pass california sniffers with spun metallic cats and a proper tunes. but it is important to remember that the catalytic converter needs to be on if not in the DP, the closer to the heat the better it will work to burn off the nasty stuff you don't want the sniffer to catch.

magnaflow has some spun metallic cats, but I dont remember how many cells they had. i think it was 300.
if you need help finding a 100 cell spun metallic cat shot me a pm. I know where you can get them.

left 300 cell metallic spun cat + 3" y pipe, right 3" hi flow ceramic honeycomb cat.
see how small the spun can is compard to the hi flow, a few lbs worth for sure.

I have the magnaflow cat from Reds for that "one day" a year I need it. I leave the wastegate rod off, so I don't really know how good it flows, but between it and the TT chip, It's never failed.
