Most law enforcement agencies if not all these days require officers who are in training at the academy to smell both burnt marijuana and fresh marijuana. The reason is so that they can testify in court that they knew the smell that they detected. You are probably correct that most people have smelled it at other times in their lives but this is mainly for court purposes. And by the way, you know nothing about me. ;)

Ok so its for court. And you dont know squat about me neither but from that remark I guess you were one who needed training eh

I'm not the one who "claimed" to know something about you like you did. Explain what training I need.

Ok pull your duty belt up another foot so your arms stick out a little further and lets go back a few lines.

You said quote: With proper training.....un quote
You said that any cop could detect the smell with proper training

you made no mention that the proper training was for testifying like having a certification...That simple revelation mind you would not have had me responding in the first place.

You made it sound like all cops have to go through this like they were all straight A jocks back in High School who never as much as came near the $hit
and therefore needed the "proper training"

I said that I doubted you nor Billy or any one else whos a cop on this board needed the training to know what it smelled like going from HOW you typed it.

So if your HS graduating class was 10 and you spent all your weekends working on the farm and your last name is Yoder then I can understand but if you grew up like 90% of the rest of America then you needed no training.. except for court related testifying.

So if I am wrong that you did require the proper training needed to detect the odor of weed then please forgive me trooper and I beg you Please dont pull me over for doing 65 in a 65 while driving through Ohio

How hard were you pounding on your keyboard as you typed? Relax. I'm betting little man syndrome or else your wife was banging a cop.........either way you "fail"

Troop is right most cops use the phrase" from training and experience." We do get the burned marijuana and "old" marijuana so you know what the smell is when you pull someone over as well as other purposes besides traffic stops i.e. walking into a domestic violence call and seeing a marijuana grow (large growth) which can enable you to get a telephonic search warrant and the like. It also so you can testify and say due to my training and experience i realized the odor and (Fill in the blank with your reasonable suspicion or probable cause for the rest).

Tony, I know LVM is a big department, but do you know Ed Reese? Last I heard he was working the strip on bike patrol. Good guy. We worked at the capitol county together.

Point is I was cool, didn't have nothing to hide and was nice...

Attitude can change any situation...

+1 That being said..........

well if SOME cops werent dicks we wouldnt have a problem right?

A.j.

If some people weren't criminals then we wouldn't need cops and if some people weren't dicks then the cops might not be either. Some LEOs may be truly bad people but more than likely any one that you think has a bad attitude got it from having to deal with a bunch of people giving him that attitude first. Some people see a stricly business attitude as being rude. When anyone is stopped they are automatically in the defense mode which may make anything coming from the Officer seem like it is confrontational.

Or they were hit by a lady putting on make-up or a person texting or even just useing the phone, maybe that 90 year old that is taking meds legally and still attempting to drive they might want to worry about?

I smoked my share of weed when I was younger and im 100% sure I was a way safer driver than any of the ones I listed above,as I was paronoid and actually drove the speed limit or slower...

Or at least you think you were. Drugs effect one's judgement and changes the perception of reality because if they didn't then why would people take them? Just ask the drunk that's all over the road but thinks he's driving straight. The difference is that except for the states that have the cell phone laws, the rest of that is not illegal. Stupid, yes, and potentially just as deadly, but not illegal.

I live in newjersey, and as a 23 yr old male. i know first hand how much new jersey suck majooor whale c*ck. but for any idiot whos burnin, aka smokin weed in there rides, deserves the hassel, and all the bs to go with it. I just cant wait to the the hell outta here...... jersey that isss

It all boils down to how big an @$$ someone wants to be, wether their LE or the civilian. As a professional driver I've had to deal with many LE's, some for infractions I got stopped for and some for routine, random inspections. I've had to deal with reasonable LE's and unreasonable LE's.

Bottom line is you get to decide how you will react. A smart mouth and bad attitude on your part will always insure the same from the LE. A respectful attitude and polite direct anwers will many, many times get you off the hook because you get to set the stage.

With that said in all my encounters after 40 years of dealing with police I've only met 4 who were unreasonable and out of control and had no business holding the position of LE. You will meet someone who has no business being LE, but how much it costs you is still up to you.

Way to go Billy T.. starting another cop bashing thread.. You got Greg about to get his ass kicked back to Ohio, Scott W all wound up, torque converters-trans fluid smelling like reefer and Shane scared to leave NC!!! LOL

Who cares about roadside PC, you got the power to raise the blood pressure of so many across this country with a few strokes of the keyboard! Good Job!

I keep seeing posts that suggest that your attitude has to be nice to the policeman in order to be treated fairly.

I'm saddened to see that this is what has become of our country. Our citizens have been brainwashed into believing they are subjects in some sort of kingdom where your liberties are controlled at the whim and mood of the police.

It shouldn't matter one bit what the cop personally feels about you. Either he is enforcing laws or he is carrying out personal vendettas.

Unfortunately it is a fact of life that there are enough laws on the books to criminalize nearly every waking moment. Every day there are more. Everyone on this forum is a law breaker and it's only going to get worse.

This empowers police to essentially be judge, jury, and executioner. They can pick and choose what level of "justice" they see fit depending on their mood. One minute you can be just receiving a speeding ticket, and the next minute that cop can change his mind and decide he "smells" something. Based upon that he can now have your vehicle towed and detain you. What is the penalty if he is wrong? Nothing... you get a "have a nice day". What kind of insanity is this?

There is a problem with our "justice" system when the U.S. currently has the largest documented prison population in the world, both in absolute and proportional terms. We've got roughly 2.03 million people behind bars, or 701 per 100,000 population.

Maybe if we looked into a somewhat libertarian document called "The Constitution" we'd come to our senses and stop putting people in prison over stupid things like plants and many other non violent "crimes"
