There are good and bad within the police department just like every other group of workers. The bad get noticed and publicized, the good just do their jobs and occasionally get recognized, usually in the last 2 minutes of the news or the lifestyles section of the newspaper.
However I will say that protecting and serving never seem to be in your favor when you are confronted by an officer. Generally you get the perception you are guilty until proved innocent. Sometimes it is a reality. Think about a DUI checkpoint: someone with red eyes, poor speech or lack of coordination is not first considered to have hay fever or a handicap are they? Once you pass the test, then you are innocent.
