I have a leak around the manual/shift shaft on the transmission I installed. Now NAPA offers a “A/Trsax Shift shaft Speedi-sleeve & Seal kit for ~ $32.00. It says that the sleeve ID is .500 “. Is this the correct diameter?

How much of a pain in the butt is this to change out the seal and maybe install the sleeve if needed?

It shouldn't need the sleeve, I've never had one that a new seal didn't fix.

Any trans shop should have the special tools to remove and install that seal without pulling the pan or shift shaft out. They should also have a big pile of those seals laying around. Now if you want to do it yourself, you can pull the pan, take the nut off the shift linkage on the inside, FILE THE SHAFT SO THAT IT WILL SLIDE OUT FREELY (this is important, tightening the nut distorts the shaft so to get it out, the end must be filed round again, otherwise you will have to hammer it out and risk damaging something), and when the shaft is out you can pry the old seal out with a screwdriver and hammer the new one in with the right size socket. I would drive the car to a trans shop and pay them the $35 or whatever they want to do it without taking it apart.

I assumed it shaft had to come out. See, It pay's to ask.

that's the tool. That one in particular is longer for use with late model trans. that have an external PNBU switch, which have a much longer shift shaft. If you put a longer bolt through the center it will work on early ones as well. It has grooves cut in the very end of it so that it will twist in and grab the seal, then by screwing the bolt in it pulls it out. the other tool is just a hollow tube of the correct size to hammer in the new seal over the shaft. Saves a bunch of time, might be worth buying the tool if you still want to do it yourself. Others sell it too (cheaper) i'm sure.

I dropped it off at the tranny shop. I will let them do it. They said they would take care off it, Even though they did not rebuild the tranny.
