Can anyone tell me what 3 speed tranny<manual> came in the GN. I know this tranny porbably won't stand up to alot of torque and horse. so is ther any way to get this tranny to handle the power a modded turbo v6 can throw at it.
I would like to have just a little more fun in my regal. Please help me.

ps I was thinking of a 6 speed but i don't want to have to pay for the adapter plates and then install the new input shaft and all that.

dude

I read some where where they had Well then do you know where i can find an adapter plate for a richmond gear 6 speed to a buick engine?

Chris

Try a search, this has been discussed many times. The engine wasn't designed for a manual and will be 1. slower with it and 2. not live as long. The forces a clutch puts on a motor are totally different from an automatic. You'd probalby end up with crankwalk if you used a manual for long.

Think Jericho.
You'll want a tought tranny. Without spending ALOT of money your just not going to find a tranny to live behind it.

The other thing is tuning.
With an automatic the engine can just spin up to the stall speed of the converter so you can be somewhat agressive with the tune. With a manual you have to downshift anytime you want to go, or be very conservative on the timing.

And don't forget about needing a really slick clutch.
The GN only has 3 firing pulsations per revolution, which generates larger shock loads for the clutch to deal with when releasing and engaging.

If you want to shift all the time, I'd suggest a 4L8E with a paddle shifter, but, that'd be alot of money too.

You read wrong. Regals were offered with the Saginaw 3 speed behind the naturally aspirated V6 from 78-80......not with the turbocharged engine. But as others suggested, do a search and you will find your answers.

Dude.........Where can I get one of dem 3 speed saginaws? 6 gears sounds like too much shiftin. :p

Richmonds don't need an adapter plate. They use a regular bell housing that you can find on a '70s Monza with a 231.

I'd go something scatterproof because when the turbo spools 600 lbft of torque can hurt a clutch.

For a 6 speed richmond figure $3500 Min for the trans shifter and mounting and another $1000 plus for the bellhousing and clutch, linkage, pedals, etc. Order it with the road race 6th because a turbomotor will explode the standard gear in seconds.

Imagine the built auto you could buy for $4500+, then forget you ever thought about putting a manual behind a TR motor.

I wish someone here would just do the swap and put this dog to rest. I think it would be interesting to see what happens.

Actually UN, the Monza bell wont work since the pivot stud is on the wrong side (remember it is a pull style cable clutch) and the fork comes out almost on the bottom.
Use the bell from a 78-81 Buick V6 or Pontiac 301 GM part#563441 (discontinued). It has the pivot stud mounted in the lower location so that the stock mechanical linkage would work. Or you could use any 64-81 BOP bell housing that has the dual starter pockets (driver side pocket for Olds and Pont. Pass side for Buick) and install a Tilton or McCleod Hydraulic slave cylinder.
Anyway you look at it, it is a rather $$$ and part intensive swap.

ya know, buick DID make 5 spd prototype GNs. about two of them i belive. one of them is at a comunity collage auto shop near my house :)

okay well i guess the manual is out of the question i will get a manual valve body for the th200-r4 and shift it manually from there it sounds like a better deal. any one know of a place that sells the weight a spring kits to adjust the governer for wide open throttle gear changes and what not, i know TCI sells them for th-350 th-400 and the th700, but i don't think they sell them for the th-200r4 that sounds like an even better idea.. -Chris
