Do any of you fight fans train in the arts or are you just a fan of the fight game?

I train, or trained until I was hit by a semi...looking to get back...I was 2 months out before my Pro Debut. MMA style...I do jui-jitsu and kickboxing.
Trained at Mark Laimons then to Randy Couture's place here in vegas.

Started Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts in October 1990. Received Black belt in August 1994 and was 2nd degree by 1996.

This was 4-5 times a week straight. Almost like getting a College Degree.

Taught classes til '98. Train off and on since.

Always a big fan of UFC since day one. Don Frye was my favorite. Dan Severn trained in some Cuong Nhu schools way back.

GrandMaster Quyhn Ngo is my very best friend. He is the son of the founder and now head of the style.

This style is the real deal. It teaches ruthless self defense and has a code of ethics.

This style is Worldwide. It is NOT driven by money. No amount of money will get you to pass your test. If you fail...you start over. You actually earn your belts here.

Interesting history on the link...to bad no dojos by me, it looks like a cool place to check out!!

I have always wanted to but never have.
Practicing High Kicks on my punching bag does not count. (although the neighbors probably get a good laugh out of it)
There are a lot of choices in the Bay Area.
About 6 blocks away there is a good TKD school.
Fairtex would be cool to learn some great stand up but it is too far during the week.

At this point I think any of the disciplines would help me get in better shape.
15 years or desk jobs have done wonders to my figure...LOL

Sorry to hear about your accident.
Best wishes getting back into the shape you want to!

I was taking BJJ and MT classes till I started driving a big rig.....never home to go now.

Got my yellow belt in BJJ but had to stop as I was preparing for the orange belt test

Its alot of fun and a great way to get into shape!

Im a big fan of MMA too,
hoping Sherk and Tito go down Saturday night!

Joshua,

Do you think think that Dana gave Tito a going away present with Lyoto?
Meaning he wants Tito to lose?

I have never been a huge fan of Sherk's style.
Him not coming clean about the roids did not make me like him anymore.'

Yeah...I think exactly that!

Machida is the real deal! that dude is no joke! everyone talks about how awsome BJ Penn is (including me) and Machida tore BJ apart. he also gave Rich Franklin his only other loss (besides Silva) Of course Tito is alot bigger than both them (205lber) but Machida's style is soo unorthodoxed I dont see Tito being able to do anything.

Cant think of the name but Tito tried to hire a guy that used to train with Machida! To get any inside tips

Dana hates Tito and definitely hopes he losses and ends his career with the UFC looking like a looser

Tito couldnt touch Chuck and everyone knows what Chuck is gonna do! Machida is soo elusive no one knows what he will do.

I also dont like Sherk....I was a fan of his, he (so I thought) has a awsome work ethic and is in amazing shape but after getting caught with roids.....and not owning up to it I lost all respect.

I trained for 2-3 months at a local MMA gym but I kinda grew uninterested in it and I haven't been in many months. I wasn't any good on my stand-up or ground game for that matter and got armbarred way too easily most of the time. Plus I'm going to college and studying and playing pool in the APA league 3 days a night so I really don't have time for much else. I still practice striking around the house everyday for a few minutes just to keep halfway warm.

Did you ever get anxious about submissions?
I can't imagine struggling and getting stuck with a RNC.
That and getting stuck in a knee or arm bar with some newb or
jerk who applies it too hard.

I just panicked most of the time and of course that's the last thing you want to do. I never had any trouble with getting choked out because I knew how to defend against a triangle choke or a RNC. In fact whenever I did submit someone,it was with a triangle or RNC. It was mainly jui-jitsu I had trouble with. When I would roll with someone during BJJ class,I would up not knowing what to do when I had the upper hand. But I could counter fairly well though. Never did roll with any newbs who were too rough. The classes were monitored very well. Once I did see the instructor roll with a guy and choke him unconscious with a triangle because the guy refused to tap. It was funny as crap because when the kid tried and stand up right after gaining consciousness,he nearly busted his ass and the instructor sat him down again.
The main thing that got me discouraged from that gym was that most of the students had a lot more experience than me and I feel were less patient when they showed me moves. For example in BJJ class once,I just couldn't figure out how to get an armbar from full mount in a smooth transition. I was practicing with a veteran of the gym and I could tell he was frustrated at me. It probably didn't help matters when I accidentally kicked him in the head while trying to swing my other leg around. ;)

I too was taken out of the arts by an accident. I was hit by a dump truck weighing 80,000 lbs. I am lucky to be alive. I now have a titanium plate in my neck with six screws, and am missing bone from my hip.
I grew up with a father that held a black belt in Shotokan, a black belt in Jui- Jitsu, and a brown in Judo. I got into Kuk Sool in the early 90's. I was hit in 03, surgery in 04 and was warned not to get back into any art as I could end up in a wheelchair if I got hit just right. SUCKS

I had a similar experience. The BJJ school I went to would teach various techniques to the whole class even though people were at different skill levels. So here I am fresh off the street trying to learn some ridiculous move for veterans.
To make matters worse, I think that some people take martial arts because they have a personal complex about something. I always used to end up rolling with this shorter guy that I'm convinced was taking out short-man frustration on me as he would get very aggressive and was generally an ass instead of being helpful and instructive (he was way more advanced at the art than I was)
So that kind of left a sour taste in my mouth.

That said, I did start to get better. I found that offensively I accomplished very little after 2 months, but defensively, I became pretty good at preventing successful armbars or chokes to be applied to me.
I guess thats probably the normal progression of things but it is rather discouraging when you go every day to just try and avoid getting submitted rather than see any progress offensively speaking.

I'm going to start doing a little training again next week with a couple of BJJ guys I met at work so hopefully that goes better.

At 41 the only thing im fighting is a bad back, bad knees, arthritis in both hands from 4 boxer fractures (long ago)

Right now I been fighting the urge to stay out of the pedal

I wrestle for my highschool and box at the cus d'amato gym. Ive grown more towards boxing than mma, but i am still a big fan. Many mma fighters train at cus'. By the way i am also pulling for machida, Wanderlei too.
