Meth vs. denatured

I am the proud new owner of a used SMC system. Denatured is VERY expensive here at $12 a gallon at Home Depot. I am sure that I can find meth a lot cheaper. What are the negative aspects of using methanol vs. denatured?

I asked the same question of Julio and he said that methanol is the first choice. It is $2.95 a gallon at the local race shop.

The ability to run methanol has to do with the pump.... Call Steve to see if your pump will not have issue with methanol. Yes I agree on the cost issue, as 12 bucks a gallon hurts..

shop around a bit,i found a place around the corner from me that sels it for 6 bucks a gallon. try small hardware stores or sherwin williams. :biggrin:

I can't figure out why Home Depot and others charge so much for ethanol. Ethanol right now is cheaper than gasoline. We have gasoline staions near us selling 89 octane with 10% ethanol for less than 87 octane without.


As ethanol prices have fallen, the price for a gallon at home improvement stores has gone up.

My buddy says you can use washer slovant??? and he also is using it in his set up.
It is 98% meth or eth depending on brand and only $1 per gallon!!!!

Razor is this right I just looked at 2 bottles in the garage and both say Eth and not to drink it lol.

Careful on your advice. The older SMC kit uses an EFI type pump.. any water.. its toast.

Also the only washer solvent that has a high concentration of methanol are the "winter" formulas.. typically not on shelves in the summer

If its alcohol you can drink.. you cant spray it. If its alcohol you can spray.. you cant drink it :biggrin:

Biggest deal is the pump and what it can/cannot spray.

Lastly... "IF" the container doesnt list specific alcohol content.. more than likely its very low. What someone uses.. good luck. My methanol I buy for 2.50 a gallon.. pure 100%.. no chance of soap/amonia/dye/???? who knows what else.

Blow your motor up cuase you wanted to save on something that is relatively cheap... what can I say.

If you have an older SMC kit, the recommended alcohol is denatured with an additional lubricant like the Klotz.

Never said I did it lol, I know my buddy runs it in his car, but I also never though it was a good idea
Me personally will find the meth and use that even if it cost a bit more I would rather be safe than sorry

And since you replied to this post razor I am sure no one will be using washer solvent in the alky systems righ guys!!

yes you can run methanol in smc .that is what i use in mine is methanol .it is 2.99 gallon around here in michigan .i run 26 psi no knock .never had problem at all .i would call steve at smc because i was getting some transitional knock because line was draining back into tank, and he sent me a little valve that goes into the line to stop bleed back and to keep press in line .do you have the dual or single sprayer ??? i have dual and love it .also have heard alot of good things about razor .just havent used that system so i cant say one is better than the other .i think razor was first w/ progreesive controller but smc has one now .both kits will work .oh if you do run meth use good upper cyl lube i use klots about 1 cap full per tank.have fun and enjoy hope i have helped
