Methanol, VP M1 or generic industrial Methyl Hydrate

Hi,

I'm wondering if it's worthed to pay 3 times the price for M1 VP racing methanol or industrial one is ok ?

Is it 2 totally different products or the VP one is the same thing with a cuter label ?

If you are in Canada then you can but Methy Hydrate at stores like Home Depot and Rona. It's marked as 99.99% pure. It is what I use in my Alky Control kit.

However in the US it is not as readily available and the VP Methanol seems to be the best solution.

As long as it is pure and not contaminated with petroleum then you will be fine. Make sure your container and your funnels are clean and do not have residue from gasoline or other fuels. I prefer sealed containers from VP or Torco. In an emergency some denatured from home depot or lowes will work but it is 3 times the cost.

One last question, I can buy 5 Gal or 45 Gal. 45 Gal will last something like 2 years... is it ok or the methanol lost is property after a certain time ?

I use the industrial grade. Over 150 gallons burned so far with no problems.

Make sure you seal the container completely after using. Store off the ground on 2x4s. I've stored for around 2 years at times with no problem.

Buy it 5 gallons at a time. See how long it lasts and make future decisions based on that.

The main problem with storing methanol is that it sucks water out of the air. Keep it sealed, in a dry environment if possible, and try to keep it at constant temperature if you can.

Don, can you pls give the name of the industrial grade that you're using? Methanol doesn't seem to be readily available in my area. Does it produce the same energy as methanol? I'm currently running denatured alcohol and have read that methanol packs more energy. Thanks!

If you order methanol from any chemical company, you will get industrial grade methanol. If I remember correctly, it's around 97% pure. Racing fuel grade methanol is advertised as more pure and is more expensive. Racing fuel grade methanol must be more pure inorder to pass inspection at racing events where the fuel SG is carefully tested. Also, when you're mixing methanol with nitro in a tuneup that's on the ragged edge, you don't want any trace impurities causing power or engine durability problems.

Just simply order methanol. If they ask industrial or racing fuel grade, just tell them industrial.

cpac, Yes this is the Gotham in Rosemère in from of the IGA (I thought it was in St-Thérèse but I'm not sure)
I don't know the price for the 5 gal. I saw somewhere that somebody bought 45Gal for 160$ ...

Hopefully this is like when I bought paint from them... when you pay cash... no tax ;-)

Hi, I finally went to Gotham. The methanol is 99.9% pure and it's 30$ for 5 Gal (20L) with no tax if you pay cash.
