I was talking to a guy at the local autoparts (an independant NAPA affiliate as I recall) and he was saying that Mobile 1 has degraded their oil this year and it is only 4th or 5th best now. He was recommending Amsoil as the best overall synthetic.

I already bought my Mobile 1 for this year and only put about 2000 mi on it in a year anyway, so I didn't "bite".

These guys have been around almost as long as dirt and were in business a long time before they became a NAPA.

Anyway, I thought I post this just to give everyone something else to chew on today.

Tom

sounds like he has an Amsoil distributorship to me...I would not pay much attention to it. :)

how do you degrade an oil? what oil company would intenionally make there product worse? i wouldnt listen to the man, sounds like a load of bull $hit.

Mobil hasn't degraded, other oils have gotten better. Mobil 1 is the same mobil 1 it has always been. There are other synthetics that have higher coking resistance and higher temperature capability than mobil 1, now, and maybe that is why they rate higher. It's still performs way better than conventional oil for coking resistance.

One thing he mentioned was that the antiwear additives went from 120,000+ ppm to 90,000+ ppm.

The reason was to lower the price and appeal to more people. Supposedly a marketing campaign is also being kicked off. I had seen on this board that Walmart is selling Mobile 1 for 17.88 a 5 pack, which at least made me take some notice.

It appears Mobil 1 is coming out with a new oil this year with "supersyn".

If the Walmart oil is not labled "supersyn" it would make sense why they are unloading the old oil.

At least more sense than what the amsoil distributor is telling you.

I read up alot on oil additives and such a while back and decreasing the antiwear additive probably had a WHOLE lot more to do with emissons then price. I am not absolutely sure about Mobil 1, but I know that "Zinc something or other" :D is used as a primary antiwear additive and this stuff coats catalytic converters.

I have read that once you have enuf, zinc, more does not improve it...I think more than one have cut back on it.

Exactly Steve

I read the same thing. More zinc gives you prolonged protection against metal to metal contact not more.

Just used it this weekend for the first oil change in the ram air T/A sure wish it was only 17.88 a 6 pack but more like 30.00$ It is a new formula with something they call supersyn. the package says it is formulated for higher mileage vehicles to extend their life... or something like that.

My engine builder recommended Castrol GP Race Oil or Penzoil with Z7 for break-in since they did not reduce the amount of anti-wear additive like other oils. A high quality synthetic (specifcally not Mobil 1) was recommended at 1,000 miles.

I have been using royal purple this spring and i love it. I would never use Mobil 1 because it would be so thin it leaked!

I'll stick with the "old" Mobil 1 for $17.88 for 5 quarts, from Wal-Mart.

"Old" it may be, but since it was the first synthetic available to the masses, when none of the johnny-come-lately's could even spell synthetic or weren't even around, since it's served me well for 15 years, and since it's $3.57 per quart...

Besides, the new stuff is probably just Exxon feeling the need to meddle with Mobil's stuff (???)

:)

I bought some of the new Mobil 1 at wal mart this weekend.
3.58per quart x 6 =21.48.

What is oil weigth 0w-30???? Is it compared to strait 30w.
I bought the 0w-30 weight. I thinking I need to return it and get something else. What weight oil do you guys run? Im in the heat down here in Houston.

Thanks

Don't think you want the 0-30 in a Regal down here, Chris. Might be pretty low on oil pressure at idle on a hot day.

I run 10-30 in one car and 15-50 in the other.

Ha! I run them both in the same car:eek: I got 10-30 this year before I realized that I had gotten 15-50 last. I used up the 15-50 anyway. And now I find out that this year's is supersyn. I hope this works out better than the time I mixed ammonia and Clorox!

Tom

What about 20w-50? I like to run thicker oil. I think 10w-30 is going to be to thin.

Thanks in advance

I see a lot of different suggestions and opinions on oil. This I know for sure... I am not a turbo v-6 expert, but the oil you choose will be key to the success or failure of your internal components. These little motors do require a certain weight oil.
I think it is 5w-30 or 10w-30 depending on your conditions. I live in leesville, La. and it gets quite hot here. 5w-30 would be good to use but here it never gets below zero so why use it. same thing with 0w-30 that is for temps below -20F!!! 10w-30 is for anything above zero F. Multiweight oils are manufactured to be used in different climates because they meet the requirements of a light oil in cold temperatures and of a heavy oil in hot temperatures. for example... 10w-30 would be as thin as 10w oil at zero degrees F.anything followed with a w, just means that it meets SAE requirements for low temperatures.
The second # is in reference to viscosity..or how fast an oil flows. I think 30 is the magic # a good flow rate for pressure and viscosity which helps to cool more effectively. So all of you 20w-50 guys out there just thimk about this..... yes you can visibly see the oil pressure gauge rise but only because it takes more pressure to make it flow. also the flow of the oil is reduced which in turn does not let you take full advantage of the oils ability to aid in keeping the motor cool. Remember that is one of the functions of oil. Just an opinion from 20 years of maintenance and instructor experience.

Excellent point TC, I have always thought the same thing. Increasing oil pressure by running thicker oil is junk science IMHO, it may look good on paper, but you really are just pushing less oil and maybe your pressure is higher but your film strength may be weaker?? I buy Mobil 1 by the buckets when its on sale and use 10 w30 with a bottle of valvoline sythethic oil additive (looks kinda red when poured) that may be junk science as well???
