snopes.com: Condom Hair Bands

BEIJING (AFP) - Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China threatening to spread sexually-transmitta ble diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday

In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.

'These cheap and colorful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ..... threatening the health of local people,' it said..
Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.

'People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns,' the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying. A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 sen (three cents), much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity, the paper said.

A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms was illegal. China 's manufacturing industry has been repeatedly tarnished this year by a string of scandals involving shoddy or dangerous goods made for both domestic and foreign markets.

In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems.

Check your kids hair bands and make sure they do not put them in their mouth while trying to plait or tie their hair
.

REMEMBER THE PAINT ON KIDS TOYS?

Our govt has to be extra careful on these cheap imports from china. These includes clothes, food, toys, slippers and even glasses because the Chinese are using some strong but cheap chemical in their manufactures. Cheap is becoming expensive and at the same time fatal.
These slippers are also sold in Walmart, USA and same complaints received.

The key word here is "recycled" condoms.

No way could they even gather used condoms to be made into hair accessories. First of all, condoms intended for normal use against STDs and birth control contain silicone or propylene glycol lubricants and spermicide. They would have to be thoroughly cleaned of these materials to be usable.

Recycled or rejected condoms are ones that don't make it to the packaging lines. They may fail due to a bad/old batch of latex thus yielding poor elasticity. Only then I could see these unsaleable condoms used for other purposes.

I agree used condoms being used are unlikely, I do recall buying plenty of Magnums:biggrin: when I was single that were dry. No lubricant. No spermicide.

Point of the thread is to check the items before you buy. Spend a little more for quality.

And who has the job of going around looking for used condoms, must kind of be like the bum going thru dumpsters looking for pop or beer cans, I find this
hard to believe unless they have a condom dump off station:eek: but you never know

They are the rejects from the manufacturing line. I watched a video on how rubber gloves are made one time. I work in the dental industry and just about all gloves are made in Asia now. Its the same process for them as condoms made by the same companies. They showed the failures being remade into other products that didn't need to meet the standards for medical gloves. No medical threat from them, only if you have an allergy to latex. Non-allergenic gloves and condoms are more common now.

So gloves that fail, become condoms. 1 glove = 5 condoms! What an idea. Think about the glove, think about the size of the finger. Size does matter.

Maybe it works for them??
