Sold a 2004-R to a guy for his 86 GN. included a used D-5 converter from a known good running trans.[Free!]
10 days he's back.. ft pump busted.. wear pattern indicated converter was too far out of pump, allowing the tangs to be tip loaded and broken off. Customer asked when he called, at what RPM the tach should read at 70-75 mph? Said it didn't feel like the converter was locked up. Customer paid $80 for new pump and labor. Found that the flywheel was warped. Replaced w/ "good" used wheel.
10 days go by.. does it again! Now he's all over my back w/ threats, etc, that there's something wrong w/ the assembly and/or the converter.
Now for the ??;) Will the converter go onto the stator support far enuf to allow some clearance w/ the flywheel, and still not be on the inner spline far enuf to allow lockup?
If this is what's happening, would failure 1 & 2 be the result of this improper install?
What else could be doing this??
Would a thrust failure allow the converter to be pushed far enuf forward to cause this?

I told the guy I was not going to go any further and he's PISSED!

I'm almost of the persuasion to have it repaired, deduct the cost, and refund the balance! Any thots on this??

TIA,

Back under my rock :D :D :D

The subject line tells it all!

I'd say these were symptoms of improper installation, especially if the drive lugs of thr rotor were snapped off. The warped flywheel
makes me think that the tranny was forced down with the converter still bolted to the flexplate. I have seen pump rotor
drive lugs lathed off when the converter went forward from a severely cracked flexplate (Chevy), but I don't think thrust bearing
wear could get bad enough to cause the damage you describe.
Question w/ smiley: if the
pump stator is fully into the converter, so is the input shaft. It's
possible that the customer's lockup wiring has a problem.
I'd tell him to take his problem elsewhere (a nice way of putting it)!

Chuck..

He should have used a new converter after the pump issue. It sounds like installation error to me and the flexplate would play a big part. Especially if the "bow" has flattened out. I would tend to lean towards first time was install error, second time was not replacing converter after the first escapade.

Have helped a couple guys recently install their motor. When I asked how much clearance between flexplate and converter, they said none but could still turn the converter. After pulling the motor out of the way, they finally got the converter all the way in the pump with 3/8" or so of clearance. Some of these converters are VERY hard to get properly in the pump, especially when on your back.

Car would have been driven that way [not for long!] had I not insisted converter was improperly installed. Sounds like your case the first time?
