2004R from 87 T-type, reverse pattern manual valve body, used 9.5" non-lockup TC, only 200 miles on tranny since build and has done it since day 1.

Getting a rattling noise in Reverse, Neutral and 1st at idle only. Wondering what the most likely cause would be, the TC or something in the tranny? Doesn't rattle in park, second, third or OD.

Seems to shift and operate fine, just has an annoying rattle, more like a buzz.

I'd really rather not have to tear the tranny apart again. Best guesses?

Unbolt the flexplate and see if it goes away

Huh?

Unbolt the flexplate and see if it goes away

Huh? Do you mean unbolt the flexplate from the crank or the torque converter? Either way, won't that stop the transmission from turning at all? Perhaps I'm missing something here. (befuddled)

Yeah disconnect it from the converter. We dont know if the noise is coming from the trans or not. Could be the bolts are loose also:eek: Park and neutral are the same in the trans. Its funny its not making the same noise in park and neutral.

Ah, now it makes sense... Was wondering why you'd want me to disconnect the only connection between the crank and the tranny. I follow you now though.

I'll have to give that a try and see. Thanks

what kind of torque converter is in the trans? the old vigilantes rattled quite a bit.

Some wierd looking aquamarine color...no markings on it...came with the tranny when I got it from some clown in North Carolina who said it was good, the right one for the tranny and had just been removed from the T-Type along with the tranny, where he said it had only been for a few passes. There aren't any idenitifying marks on it and the color is strange looking. I've been comparing it to others I've seen and it doesn't seem to match up to anything out there, so your guess is as good as mine.

Why would you run a converter that you don't know anything about?

Noise could be thrust bearing related. Doubtful since it sounds like it started when the transmission was rebuilt, but possible.

Ignorance, low budget, reputation of the guy I got it from, and general faith in the human race that I wasn't being stiffed.

Wasn't expecting the guy to shaft me. His word had always been good in the past and I wasn't expecting to be chastized for it. If there is an issue with the converter, I'll soon find out, but it works too well for there to be anything too major wrong with it.

The Vigilantes worked very well they just made noise, if you can live with the noise they were great.
