I've got this resonance @ 2000 rpm it's terrible, is there any muffler that is quiet but gives good flow, BTW i've heard that flowmaters actually decrease hp(on turbo cars), is this true?

3" magnaflows

2-3/4 duals with two 3" magnaflow mufflers (Terry Houston SYS), they are straight through , the mufflers are quiet and have NO DRONE, it is an amazingly quiet system at idle and cruise .

87 silver limited
had stock 90* turbo elbow BGC 2 3/4 downpipe and snaked down test pipe, summits hooker cat back dual exhaust-- car droned like a SOB and i hated it---

swapped to THDP and 3 INCH test pipe DRONE WENT BYE-BYE
and i can make passes on the highway and nobody looks at the car cause its soooooooo quiet!! at idle the car is mute-
does not have aero chamber mufflers-
i believe they too are DYNO MAX mufflers??? what ever used to come in the kit 3 years ago=--- looks like walker super turbo mufflers!!
HTH

Walker UltraFlow SS mufflers.

Came with my 2-3/4 duals from Jack Cotton.

I've taken several people from my club for rides and all are stunned how quite it is.

torque tech cat back 2 1/2 duels and dynomax/walker super turbo mufflers (offset in and offset out) ..this is very very quiet and has been 127 thru the traps

sounds like the dynomax/walker super turbo mufflers are the ones to go with if you want performance and not alot of noise-

REDS HOT AIR- does your car drone at all? what D.P.?

Dual 3 inch ATR exhaust with ATR Pitbulls. No drone, just loud enough. Sounds awesome. :D

I really don't think I have much drone with my car. I drove it around with no stereo for 4 years with the hooker catback with aerochambers, thdp and test pipe.

I've heard people put a muffler in place of the cat on the hooker system for the super quiet ride (3 mufflers).

I will go out on a limb here and say they all drone, excepting the stocker, at 2K.

I use the Walker SS Ultraflows and there is some drone. My car is completely dynamatted inside too.

I wonder how the 3" ATR crossflow system is for drone? :)

Must be similar to stock in design maybe it doesn't drone too.

lil hooker d/p with deltagate and gutted cat..

no drone in mine...its really quiet..but not for long i have atr's 3" single in the garage waiting to go on with atr's external d/p also with deltagate

I'll tell you what NOT to do....

P&P heads, cam, 3" Terry Houston DP, 3" test pipe, 3" ATR SS single shot.

DRONE!!!!!!!! Sounds like a chain saw on nitrous WOT and a big block idle/cruise though! :D

ATR single

HAAAHAAAA!! I second the "chain saw on nitrous" That was good!!! Yea mine sounds pissa, cruising into the car show. But WFO is BRUTAL! Everyone within 4 or 5 MILES can hear what your up to! Oh well, I better get used to it, stainless lasts a long time!! :D

I have the same system as red, except mine is 3 inch dual i believe. also has super turbo dynomax mufflers. at around 1300 rpm or so, with all the windows up and no sound deadening, it has a slight drone. after that, its gone. i just drive around 25 mph with the windows cracked and you cant hear it for some reason. i also have the hooker super competition downpipe like Red as well.

I think just about any dual muffler system will drone, just in a different RPM range.
Being a Mustang guy for many years (true dual exhaust), I've found that just about all the aftermarket catbacks drone to some extent. The OEM mufflers on Mustangs are two different sizes, hence they resonate at different RPM's, and eliminate droning.
I'm wondering if a custom exhaust on a TR, substituting a slightly smaller muffler in place of one, would eliminate drone.
Anyway...what does everybody think of the Hooker catback that Kirban sells?

Has nobody tried dissimilar mufflers?

I keep hearing about how the Mustang has two different mufflers on it. Surely someone has tried this, anybody?

Interesting comment. I actually run two Mustang mufflers down stream of a Random cat. 3" DP with ATR 2.5" system. There is NO (zero) drone. Sound is a little louder than stock. Don't know how well it flows compared to my old ultraflows (haven't been to the track lately) but I presume a lot less. Hard to have your cake and eat it too. I will eventually go back to a louder system when my build up is complete. Must be the old guy in me, but I have to admit enjoying the car more as a daily driver with the quiet exhaust.

My 87 T had 3" dual two chamber Flowmasters when I bought it in 1991, and still had them when I sold it this past Feb. However, I would not recommend it to anyone, unless your medical plan covers ear drum replacement! 2400rpm was enough to make you go mental! Someone above mentioned that Flowmasters are not a good turbo application muffler, which I would definitely agree with. Flowmasters are designed to work with an exhaust pulse and scavenging affect, as opposed to the steady forced air tone our TR's make. Back 10 years ago, they were considered one of the better choices, but now that many companies have done the proper R&D on mufflers, they've developed way better designs for our application. I personally like the Walker Ultra-Flo, as it is readily available and a straight through design. Not obnoxiously loud either. It all depends on what you want to spend, but keep in mind, motors are nothing more than big air pumps, and the key is to get the air in and get the air out as easily as possible. This is why the straight through design makes sense. The whole "back pressure" theory is a bunch of hooey, IMO. It seems that per the listings above, you'll easily be able to pick a good system. Bang for the buck,,, go with the Hooker...
