I just got my trans built by Jimmy in Mundelein, IL I got his best package he offers. Now i need a converter. It has to be a lockup and have a 3200 stall.
I heard that locking a single will not last long. And a precision multi is over $900
What are my other options?? I looked at west coast but he said since I have a transbrake the converter is $225 more so thats almost the cost of going with the precision. I talked to Dusty and his are single lock up. So what to do??? Will a single disc lock up hold up if I were to lock it up manually at the track??
This is for my GN.
Thanks guys!

Chris

A quality converter is going to cost upwards of $1k or more. This shouldnt suprise you since you just spent big $ on a good trans. If you are not going to lock at WOT then you can go single disc. Locking at WOT requires a multi-disc for durabilty. Why do you require a lockup? The best bang for the $ in a mid 10 sec or faster TR is PTC's non-locking units. They work great down low and couple very well up top (less tan 5% slip) and are more forgiving on hard parts than a locked converter. Lock up converters are old tech compared to the quality non locking units PTC has. The lockups out there are not very efficient when not locked. The PTC non lockers are the same all the time. Leaves the whole variable of lockup problems out of the picture. They are very adjustable and very efficient and are working well without pulling out multiple times for re-stalls.

Brian I am looking into doing some business with PRECISION.I have not found any converters that have a lock up disk that will live with 550 to 600 horsepower without having lock up issues. For the non locker crowd I think PTC has some very respectable results.

Like they said. The Precision multi is the best for WOT lock-ups. Mine can't be locked at WOT. What was your combo again?? There's a chance you can run a more budget minded single disk that will deliver decent slip #'s when unlocked at the track but will also utilize lock-up for long highway drives.

I have. The vigilante multi discs certainly will. Or should I say mine has. Now, granted, I was only making a little over 460HP when I was racing, but the converter not only has lived through all that for nothing less than 3 full years of a steady racing diet, but it's also survived the rigors of hard daily driving of nothing less than 8 years.

Mine is locked at WOT at by the chip and it's set for 85mph (which I can change via the chip). So track, street, it doesn't care. And of course it's locked during cruise during sane driving at a commanded speed of 55mph (which I can also change).

It still performs perfectly, and has NO slipping issues either on the street or at the track. I can still run through the traps with no more than 0.6% slippage.

I think if you want a lock up the 5 disc Vig is the way to go. Mine had .2% slip when locked. But if you do not need a lock, the PTC non lock unit has had great results.

So I guess it depends on what you want. Lock up or non lock. I know a guy with a 10.70 GN that has a 5 disc LU and has been great.

Looking back I am happy with the 5 disc Vig, but I think I would go with a non lock unit next time. The only time my car sees the highway is going to the track and back. :p

Lee Thompson runs a 5 disk and routinely runs close to 10.0 @ nearly 140 with his converter... My new combo should put me solidly in the 10's.... again... 5 disk lockup... which I plan to lockup at the strip...

My build is going to consist of a 249" Stroker built by Lonnie. 6776 BB Turbo all the good stuff. Should be a 10 sec car..

It's up to you if you want to lock at WOT. My 2800 will work unlocked with that size motor and the 6776. We'll find out in a few weeks how well it works and I'll have slip #'s. A guy is running this same combo in BG.

Dusty, Damon says it feels great. I sure hope he gets some good MPH with that converter. He says his butt dyno is usually pretty accurate.:D

I would really like to hear how it runs for him with that combo. Keep me posted...

Thanks,

You could get away with less than 3200 stall on that combo unless the engine is 7.0:1. 3000 will be a trie fryer. Car should easily run 10.50's on a light tune at 25-26psi.
