I got into turbo regals recently and got the bug bad. I ended up buying a 85 t type that needed some work. I got it running and its now my daily driver but i really wanted an 87 gn. Well we found one that was in peices but with tons of new parts just needing assembled and a few odds and ends. I personnaly didnt have the money for it so i talked my dad into buying it now hes building it in hopes that i will buy it from him when its done, this seemed like a sweet deal but he doesnt know the cars and wants it done cheap and fast. I cant seem to tlak him into buying the good quality parts the car needs or what i want to go fast i have even offered to pay for some parts but he keeps telling me to do it when i buy the car. I dont want to have to tear everything back out of a nice car because my dad didnt want it the way i did. i just need any advice on how to get him to see things my way.

If your Dad bought and paid for the car, it's his, to do as he pleases. When you pony up the bucks, it'll be yours to dictate what happens to it. Plain and simple economics.

I have to agree with TurboDave. You're dad is probably not into paying big bucks for go-fast goodies. His goal is probably to have the car completed, up and running as quick and as cheap as possible. If you want the car done the way you want it, it sounds like you need to get some $$$ together to purchase the vehicle before he finishes it so you can build it the way you want. Everything costs lots of $$$. The problem with that is, most people put more money into these vehicles than the value of the vehicle is worth. Just as most race cars, when you sell, you only get back pennies on the dollar. It sounds like your dad is a very sensible man. When you start earning your own money, you'll probably spend it differently than if it was somebody else's money.

Based on what you've said..
Your dads ways arent your ways, but someday they will be your ways too, and then you'll get it. You didnt buy the car, so you have no say in anything. You dont have to buy the most expensive parts to make a powerful, reliable car. Many aftermarket companies charge big bucks for lots of things I made myself for a small fraction of the cost. If your dad has this capability, then let him do his thing. If when you buy it, you're not happy with the way it runs (with hot rods, you're never satisfied), then pull out the cash and do it yourself.
Now if he's the type who will take a cracked swaybar and weld it back together and mount it, or uses sandpaper to get a fresh crosshatch on the cylinders...then I would have an issue.
heres what i always say to kids (well Im 36 this monday...dont know if Im old or young..its all relative I guess)..anyway what I say is, how much smarter or wiser are you than you were 5 years ago? Alot you say? Multiply that by 4 or 5 times and thats where I am, so shut the hell up and wash the dishes!
By the way, how old are you? I remember cars that by dad told me I shouldnt buy, but let me make my own mistakes, and boy was he right about those cars.

im not saying the car needs the most expensive parts to go super fast. i do know the value of money i have a job and its a lot of work to get just a few hundred bucks together im just concerned. wouldnt you be if someone was talking about putting shortened big block chevy pushrods in a turbo 6 engine?

Yes. Im sure it can be made to work, but why go through all that hell to make that work? Thats ridiculous. The thing is that the added mass of those fat pushrods will make valve float worse, which will require more spring load, which will wipe lobes on these engines. ANOTHER thing to worry about is that the radius of curvature at the end of the pushrod wont match the pushrod pocket on the rockers and may not be compatible with the lifters.
Now I am worried for you.
But the solution is simple. Just dont buy the car.

the car came with a roller cam from atr i belive, but it has the wrong pushrods i told him to call full throttle but he didnt. i want the car because its really nice powdercoated frame, hotchkis suspention, eaton posi and c clip eliminators in the rear, bulletproof tranny and brand new paint im just afraid thats hes trying to save money in the wrong place that being the engine.

Just kick him in the balls, go pick up some hookers, and drive his car for a test drive through 4 states . Seriously though- Just work a little ot and offer to pay the difference on the right ones. You say you want to own the car soon. Pay for it now, or pay for it later.

I almost ended up in your shoes but I was able to pull the “I am your youngest kid so pretty please lend me the money for the car and ill pay you as I get the money I promise”

Then I said – “and ill go with you to every swap meet with in 300 miles from home”
This year PA and NJ swap meets, ill be there.

Seriously start making payments on the car now, to show him that you mean what you say. BTW don’t argue with him, he will then do it out of spite.
