While out of town for the weekend, I noticed I was burning a fair amount oil out the tailpipe. Got back to my motel and a friend and I pulled off the air intake and found oil in the inlet bell, along with a fair amount of shaft play.

I've got the old unit almost off, and am going to contact a rebuilder in my area to see if they have parts available (they do all things diesel, so I'm sure they can help me out) to freshen this Garrett thing up. My car is a .030 over block with bolt-ons, and I want something simple to install back on, whether it be my unit rebuilt, or an upgrade.

If I want a bolt-in stock style upgrade replacement, what should I be looking at? TA49? As I said, the car isn't a race car, but it does have a fair amount of bolt-on performance parts installed.

The 49, a 44, or the new 5857. They dont require a convertor swap. Just bolt on and go. I had a 49 for 2 summers and with ALKY...it was a total blast. Ran it about 27lbs and my engine is all stock with just bolt ons.

:D

Cool, thank you. I have a 2000 stall converter now, and with the setup I have I'm happy with.

I got the turbo removed from the car. The intercooler is full of oil, I will be removing that tomorrow to clean it out.

Is this a common issue with TR's? I've never known anyone who owned one of these cars that has experienced this issue (yet). I don't know the history of the turbo, but if it's 25 years old and has never been rebuilt I can see some seals letting go.

With a larger turbo you will need a new chip but I'll second the TA49, but Kirbans has rebuilt stock units fairly cheap and this would be a great option too.

You will need at least a Garrett housing with the 2000 stall or it will be lazy with 44 or 49.
