does anyone use a polyester primer in their shops? I use the Spies Hecker, but its getting real expensive, just curios what others are using , and who likes what
The primer I us is made by Valspar. Its called N21. I pay around $130.00 a gallon. It dosent shrink, you dont have to rescuff it after you have blocked it once. It fills much better then your cheaper filler primers and sands very nicely. I have found that in the long run its cheaper to use the higher end primers then to use the lesser expensive ones. On average 1 gallon will do one of are cars.
Is the 21n a polyester? Do you cover 100-180 scratches w/it? and is $130 for the set-up? If so thats cheap! the speis is 325 for a gallon set up, thats why we're looking for something else, thanks for any input,
$130 is for a qt of hardner and a gallon of primer. Thats the compleat set up. I cover up 80 grit with it all the time. I own my own restoration shop and have had very good results with the Valspar products. I use it from bare metal up. The only thing I use differant is the Base colors. In that I use PPG because the colors are right on for the Muscle Cars. If your not too worried about the color being a little off then their paint covers very well also. If your suplier sells House Of Kolor then they can probly get Valspar. Valspar makes HOK. Contact them for any more information.
I dont know If its a Poly Primer or not. My experance with any polly primers are that if they sit longer then 24 hrs you need to resand them before spraying anything over them because the seal over. If you don't do this it will lift on you in about a year or so. The 21N fills much more then any of the polly primers that I have seen.
In my shop I take ever bolt and nut apart and do the pieces one at a time. After the body work is done. I block my cars at least 3 times useing 21N, starting with 180 then 220 and finish with 400. All with water sanding and a block that looks like a paint stick. I make them up out of carbon fiber. For an average Muscle car I use 2 to 3 gallons.
