a friend of my brothers just purchased a mint 91' GT Stang. its the 5.0 V8 (of course) with an auto trans and 100% stock. my brother suggested to this guy that he race my 85' GN when i get it back together. at first the guy declined, thinking i had one of the 86/87 turbo Buicks. after my brother informed him mine was a non-intercooled car, the dude laughed and said "oh, ok sure... ill smoke him!"

what do i need to beat this guy? ive got my car all apart right now, as im bolting on a few minor mods and doing some maintenance. my car will be all stock with the following:

- headlight ram air (ducted to the airbox) w K&N filter
- 160* stat w TB bypass
- Poston AFPR
- ATR 2.5" downpipe
- ATR stock size (but mandrel bent) uppipe
- completely removed all A/C crap

the car has been fully tuned (plugs, wires, filters), and has all new vac hoses. the turbo has been inspected and doesnt leak oil or have bad bearings. the throttle body has been completely scrubbed inside and out and the TPS voltage has been bumped up a little. i also have a Kenne Bell chip and a high flow fuel pump w hot wire kit coming in about 2 weeks, however, this guy wants to run at the track this Friday. is what i have done to the car gonna be enough to take him out? also, will the car be safe with the upgrades ive done to it w/o the new fuel pump? will just bumped FP be enough to avoid knock/detonation? thanks in advance

Dude,I don't think you can win......YET!I don't really know what it will take.My car is still slow....15.8 in the 1/4.I see some people with a TON of mods going fast.11-12 sec.The 86/87 guys run CRAZY BOOST to what we can run pretty much stock.Aparently,You will need to do 86/87 ECM swap in order to have enough info about what is really happening internally. If you want to even have a chance I would put the best race fuel in,crank up the boost to 15 pounds on a good boost gauge, hopefully you have a knock gauge, and test run it.My guess it will be sloooooooowwwwww the first few times out.Learn about it well and you WILL go faster.GOOD LUCK!:)

those cars run low 15s with the dp and intake turn the boost up a little 13-14 and you should run low15 high 14

K&N, boost, chip, exhaust, and TCC locked is all you need. Throw some racegas in for safety and boost ~19psi. I raced mine in that form back when the 5.0s were new and even with the free mods and a few boltons they couldn't hang, especially with an auto.

use some good race fuel (100 octane) 18-19 lbs boost
and with those mods you should smoke the 5.slow fairly easy
:D
let us know what happens

I think you should be able to take him, I took a 5.0 when I was stock and had bad injectors, plus 100k miles. Didnt beat me then, and dont beat me now :p

thanks for the responses guys!

i think in stock form my car could turn a low 15. before i began the modding process, i raced my own 84' Z28 (a friend was driving it), that has consistantly run mid 15s. i smoked him 3 out of 3 runs (2 - 3 carlengths).

anyway, the race will be postponed until i can find a gasket set for my turbo. i took it off to clean the oil that had gotten in there due to a backed up PCV system, and now i am having a REALLY hard time finding any gaskets for the turbo

I think it would be a good race. Since it is an auto mustang, I say you have a better chance at killing him. I used to race 5 speed 5.0 stangs with all the basic mods done to them, and i could smoke them off the line like nothing. When the hit third, they would slowly start to pull, but i would already be 3 or more car lengths ahead. I did this with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and about 16 psi boost. I ran a 14.2@98 mph at the track with my buick with just those 2 mods. Of course the car was in great running condition, no vac leaks, with a freash tune up, and fuel pressure turned up a little bit. Also my car only had 33,000 miles on it when i got it, and was stored for 6 years. It was taken care of very well, and I believe those were the factors in why it ran so well close to near stock. A stock mustang, especially automatic would probably run 15.5's or so. If its stock then they are running that restrictive exhaust and air cleaner. So you shouldn't have no problem with it. Just get all the problems sorted out and ler er rip! :)

i think you wil be able to take a mud stain since they couldnt even get close to me i and i have to roll out of a light because i have absolutely no traction. have the basic mods intake/exhaust,TB coolant bypass ajustable fuel pressure regulator,no A/c on stock boost, i lately figuered out that when i took my intake pipe off for the normal inspection i do that my turbo seals were leaking oil that must have been where that 1 quart of oil went in 2,000 miles. Now i decided to completely go over my motor and while im taking it apart this is what i noticed wrong with it; an exhaust leack at each header to head connection, one where the driverside header meets the cross over, and one in the middle of my two piece crossover pipe. also i had a blown head gasket, worn out cambearings my lifters were starting to badly detieriorate on the part that slides against the cam, and the end of one of my spark plug wires was coming off so i had an odd miss every so often. and at the drag strip just brake revving it enough to get the intake out of vacume, so no bost just a roll out i ran a 14.431 @ 96.518 , that was with my 2.180 60' from not being able to launch.

i think you will have him, good luck!!!!

Mustang for lunch

be smart and put in 106-110 race gas with a converter eliminator pipe, heated o2 sensor. raise the boost to 19-20 psi, keep timing around 18-20 deg. watch your knock gauge close and you should run low 14's. don't smoke the tires, lean on the throttle just enough to get off the line but not go up in smoke. if you stay with him off the line your mph should do the rest. good luck, let us know what happens.

Let us know who wins . I got my ass handed to me by a slightly moded mustang 2 1/2 weeks ago. I was also running 15.5-16.2 with low boost that same week but I switch my chips and turned up my boost from 15 to 18 psi and ran a 14.4 with knock of 5.8 I have some exhaust leaks and mayby bad injectors.

Before I bought my car, it ran 13.8-13.9's with the adj fpr, the kenne bell chip that I sold to you tipvette (should be there now, not two weeks), and a ported elbow the racegas. Kid had the boost at about 18ish if memory serves me, and he spun the tires off the launch. I think the stock mustang, if it really is stock, will launch soft, and this is a hands down Buick race...Good luck. Get the race gas, get the knock guage, and get movin!

sorry i havent updated in awhile... but the race is postponed until i get the car back together. i removed my turbo to clean out some oil that had gotten in there due to a backed up PCV system. however, i cant seem to get the intake side of the turbo off. i removed the 4 10mm bolts that hold the intake side to the center section, and the 2 bolts holding the wastegate solenoid to the turbo, but i cant get the intake side to move more than a 1/4 inch off the center section! and to boot, the turbines wont spin anymore with the intake side moved out. any ideas on whats holding it together? i need to get this thing apart so i can finish my cleaning process... then its race time!

BTW- racemybuick, i havent seen the chip yet and its Sat (didnt you say you had sent it out last Fri?)... any ideas on when it might get here? thanks

Are you trying to just get the compressor housing off? The compressor wheel has to come off if you're trying to get the backing plate off which the 4 bolts you mentioned hold on. Don't bind the wheel, it takes nothing to bend it and then it's off balance and wears itself out very quick. If you want to take the housing off, it's the bigger 1/2" bolts around the outside. If there's oil in there, it will clean itself out very quickly. No need to go in and clean it out.

you'll smoke em.. put some race gas in.. 110 octain turn the boost up to 18-19 lbs... bump the fp up 2lbs.. take out your air cleaner.. no problem.. should beat em be a length

I'm having flashbacks reading about your hot-air rides! Gets me exited. I have an 87GN now, but when I was 18 I built up an 84 ttype with the following mods:

Stock Bottom end, with precision 208 cam, TA49 turbo, 36# injectors, Kenne Bell Fuel pressure reg, Kenne Bell headers, 3" DP, No Cat, 2 1/4" Cat back with Dynomax mufflers, 160 thermostat, ANS electronic turbo controller, 3000 stall, and 90/10's up front with no sway bar. I street raced alot with the car, but never took it to the track. these days i wish i did- I would bet that on a cool night with race gas, I would have easily pulled off mid-12 sec. timeslips. (I ran about 20-22psi in the fall months)

Best part- I only had guages on it when I was tuning, but when I was out to street race, I was just "some dumb college kid" LOL- The car was in primer with stock wheels (26" Sportsman Pros on back) Stock interior, no guages or anything.. complete with a laundry basket full of school clothes.

never lost $ in that car once! :D
