Hey guys, I just bought a 84 T Type Riviera that runs very good until it gets warmed up and then it starts making a knocking noise. Now hold on a second.... I'm in the right forum. I was scratching my head and thinking that it might be excessive rod clearence myself so I broke out the old stethescope. It appears that the noise is coming from the rear of the trans, seems like from inside this big vertically mounted pan and radiating through the back of the engine. I'm pretty sure it is from that area of the transmission. Can someone give me an idea of what it could be and how hard would it be to build the 325-4L vs the 200-4R. I've built a few 200's and 700's with good success but I am not familiar with these at all.

Thanks, Pete

Sounds like the drive chain Pete. If it's under an oblong stamped steel cover then that's where I'd say it is.

It could also be the overdrive unit acting up, it is also under the rear cover. The round deeper part of it.

The 325-4L unit should have most of the same components as 200-4L according to my info.

The 325-4L does use some of the same parts as the 200-4R, overdrive carrier and all(except for the internal roller hub(ramp) and lefty-loosy stuff.
Do you hear the knocking noise when in park/neutral only or in reverse/drive as well? the difference is that if it is in any "gear" rev/drive, the chain/sprockets are NOT moving, so we need to know what to eliminate from potential / non relevent thoughts.
Good luck,

Kevin.
