i dont want to switch my bracket do to it being already powercoated so is there any good high output alternators? i found a few on summit but just wondering. im looking for atleast 140amps if not higher. let me know. im also going to call around town to see if there is a place that can rebuild my current one

I just bought mine from Jegs back in the day. 140 amp I believe just had to switch set up to a one wire.

i put an alternator out of an early 90's 3.1 powered Grand Prix in my car- i think it's only 120 amps, tho.

I dont know if the 86-87 style is the same as yours or not, but I used an O'reilly lifetime off of a 95 Impala ss 140 amp, cost me 120$ there are two amp rated ones, get the 140. Its also has the exciter wire which plugs right in

well i got my alt tested and guess what its bad :) better then having a faulty dash light

I just got 100amp for my 85

I just got a tuff stuff 100 amp, and it has the internal voltage regulator, bolted right up, but they did have a 150amp one at the site, I'm not sure how the mod's feel about it but i'll post the link so u can look, all i did was get the part #s and then ordered it off jegs heres the link if the mods pull it just pm me.

If ya look on jegs theres some other brands some give u 140 amps if thats what u need.

its not the same for an 84 85

same 3.8 84-87 so if the bracket lines up on urs then it should work on his bracket, but u'd have to change the pulley cause of the v belts on the 84 85.

i just ordered one from our neighbors @ turbobuicks.com

the 84-85 cars used a different accessory bracket setup than the 86-87 cars- and newer cars used the newer style CS alternators.
my 84 had a regular 12SI alternator in it stock, and the larger 140 amp alternator out of a 94-96 Caprice/Impala SS won't fit. i tried. but i wound up with the CS120 alternator out of a 3,1 powered Grand Prix. it had the offest mounting ears, but i made a simple little adapter bracket to bolt it up. i think it took me 3 minutes to make that bracket by drilling 2 holes in a small piece of 1/8" steel.

Any pics and what year Grand Prix??

any alternator from the 4.5 or 4.9 caddys in the late 80's through early 90's will work just change the pully.

high output alt

if you have a local starter and alt shop they should be able to rebuild it and raise output for less than a new one

89 or so Grand Prix with a 3.1 or 2.8 or whatever the V6 was that year- it was a car i bought for $200 and it came with a spare reman alternator in the trunk for some reason. i just took the serpentine pulley off and put a v belt pulley that i had laying around on it. it has a rock steady 14.6 volts at idle no matter how many electrical things i turn on.

I had one built at a a local friendly alt shop. $75 bucks for a 140 amper that charged every bit of 150 and more. But watch out, I tried to do the same at another shop when I moved and they totally tried to rip me off, denied it, and then started backpeddling when I told them I split the case and told them what I found. After 4 tries, and them refusing to test it (said machine was broke) I gave up and built it myself. Dirtbag redneck ripoff bastards.

The other one still rocks though.4 years, volt booster and all.
