The piece at the top is the spring retainer. It gets reused. The covers you speak of are spring dampners. If you have inner valve springs on your new ones, you won't need them. I suggest going to the store and buying 3-4 new keepers. When you try to reinstall, invariably one goes flying. Pack the head with rags all around the springs so nothing falls down into the engine. What tool are you going to use to compress the spring and how will you keep the valve from falling into the head?

His springs are the CC 980s. I thought they are put in without the shield, and the 979s go with it. Or is it the other way around? I know the two are different, but can't remember which is which.

Well if you can let me know ASAP that would be great, you are talking about the pice that go's around the spring right? I think they should go on thay have somthing to do with the oil not going down the oil valy or somthing on that line. Please let me know

The cups stay off with CC980's, go on with CC979's.

They add about 9lbs. force to the springs rating.

I have a spring removal tool that I don't need anymore. I went to junk yard and found an extra rocker shaft and some extra bolts to use so I wouldn/t scratch up my OEM, also you can just leave OEM shafts assembled and set it aside. Go buy twelve rocker shaft buttons, for around $8.00 and some extra retainers. Those little plastic/nylon things are sure dry-rotted by now. Rocker-shaft braces are a good idea for $40. I've seen a few stock shafts break in my city recently. Wanna buy my tool or shaft braces? I'm going aluminum.
