I installed new lifters thinking they were the cause of my sudden tapping/knocking noise problem. The car has not driven a mile since putting them in, and has only ran for about 5min. Maybe a few minutes more, but all off and on as I was trying to track down the source of the problem. I have not been able to get rid of the sound yet, so I guess it wasnt the lifters .

QUESTION IS, should I put the old lifters back in (in their respective spots on the cam, of course), which had less than 2000 miles on them along with the cam, or should I just leave the new ones in there?
Also, do I need to do anything to "break-in" the new lifters if I leave them. I wasnt worrying about any type of "break-in" procedure after I discovered the sound didnt go away and didnt let the car run long, but need to know just incase I do get it to go away and start to drive it again.

Thanks.

I've done the lifters with old cam before and I treated it just like a new cam and lifters. If they're already in there and you've already run it, don't worry about it. If there's damage it's already done and I doubt there's anything you can do. Most likely everything is fine. I started a fresh motor and just let it idle back before I knew anything about cam break in and I never had a problem.

Thanks. Now I just need to find the real problem so I can start driving again:mad: . Its a shame after all the problems I discovered and resolved recently. I wanted to make it to the track this year:( .

lifters

hate to rain on your parade but it's probably rod knock. it always starts off a light radiating noise. as for the lifters save them for another rebuild with low miles like that i've reused mine also.

You may be right, I just want to know what it is so I can start to do something about it.

I pulled plug wires off one at a time and silghtly reved the engine to see if the sound would go away on a certain cylinder. It didnt go away on any of them. What does this mean?

I pulled out the stethescope again. I listened around the intake, each valve cover, and the front timing chain cover. The sound was loudest from the timing chain cover. So I guess I should take it off and take a look see, huh?

I also took off the flywheel cover and discovered two torque convertor bolts were not all the way tight. However, tightening them had no improved effect on the situation.

I wouldn't think it's a rod if the sound wouldn't go away or at least get quieter from pulling the plugs. I hope it's just a valvetrain problem. One other thing I thought of is when my dad's car took out the thrust bearing it knocked pretty good. The crank went forward enough for the counterweights to hit on the block. It's easy enough to check by just pulling or prying the crank all the way back and then all the way forward and seeing how much it moves.

Hey Cool 84, I just want to make sure that I did the test correctly. I just pulled each plug WIRE not the actual plug. Might be just the way you worded it that caught my eye, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks.

Sorry, writing >me lol. I meant plug wires, had a few beers when I made that post.
