Spent the day trying to get the neutral micro in the B&M shifter to work. Have the service manual and tried a wire or 2 and no luck.
Can't use the stock linkage as it's a T-400. [Had it modded and it worked for a while.. now can't get it adjusted so trans gets all 3 gears] . It's off the car and in the junk pile and I'm too stupid to figger it out!!
Looking at the wiring, I see the infamous PURPLE wire to the starter sol. from the ign sw on the column. Problem is: it's a 12 ga., and obviously intended to carry a higher load than the puny little micro can. Guess a relay is required?? Ideas??

back to scratchin my a$$!!

PS: FWIW, The theft det. system used a relay in the purple wire, cept it was purple w/ a wht stripe..

purple

chuck ,

i ran mine using 14 ga wire from the purple wire and no probs

I think mine also has 14 gauge wires runing to the purple wire. It's been in there for close to 10 years now, with no problems.

Sw. wiring replies

Thanx for the help. will do the 14 ga. and move on.
Did you hook it in at the column, [start sw] or go out into the engine compartment?

Mine's on the column, down near to where the brake pedal is.

Neutral wiring?

Here's the "real meal deal" on the wiring.
I dropped the column in order to see the wire plugs on the start switch. There are 2 plugs.. 1 blu and 1 blk. The blu plug, [closest to the str wheel] has a purple wire in the bundle. That is the wire to splice into for interrupting the starter solenoid circuit. You could do this to either install an aftermkt shifter or a security sw.
The wire is about a 12ga. [It's metric and as such GM has a conversion chart in the shop manual to tell you what to look for.]
You can add a relay and trip it w/ an 18ga wire from the shifter,or as I did, use 14 ga. and loop it thru the shifter micro.
I also made sure the column collar was in the "park" position as the OEM neutral safety sw. sends a signal to the ECM. I am still trying to figure out if I should leave it in a "in gear" position, or "park" permanently, as it affects the vss buffer. I have a T-400 and a FAST system, so don't know if this is of consequence or not.
Anyone have any ideas on this??

The VSS is not used by the Fast unit. Also i believe if you leave the collar in a gear position you wont be able to pull the keys out.
I use an after market shifter and dealt with this. i just left it in park.;)

BTW thanks for figuring the safety switch for me, ill finally be doing it this week end.

The only scary thing about the steering wheel in Park is that the wheel will lock if the key is turned off, regardless of what gear the car is really in with the aftermarket shifter and all. Those who like to switch off their ignitions sometimes while rolling would have a nasty suprise there I guess :-) That's how mine is set up too though. Thanks for the wiring info guys!

keys out?

Thanx, Louie! I'll just leave it in a "in gear" position when running and that way I'll be able to turn it off, but the lock won't go past the off position.
When I park it, I can rotate the column and take the key w/ me.. Don't know why tho.. NOBODY would steal this pile of junk!!:D :D

Chuck, I'm getting ready to install a Megashifter with a 400 tranny. Should the purple wire be switched through the microswitch? Switched to ground or switched to a voltage?

Also the Park switch, what do i hook it to?

This car came without a shifter or tranny so that is why I am starting from scratch here. Thanks

Oh, one more stoopid qweshton, How the heck do you get the shifter back up into park??

Mega and T-400?

The purple wire gets cut, crimp/solder ends put on and then the added wiring is run thru the console to the shifter and thru the switch. [One side of the purple will be hot ONLY when cranking.]
Thus, if the shifter is in neutral or park and the micro is adjusted correctly, the engine will crank.
I left the gear selector sw. in park, but see the posts from Louie and Turbotr and what I'm going to try.
My shifter has a lock out lever on it. I have to push that lever and then the ratchet will put the trans in rev or park.
I think yours, the handle has to be pushed down on or pulled up. don't remember for sure.. Anyone???

..........

If your car has the linkage from the trans to the column, that can be used instead of the micro switch. See the install info on my web site.

The Megashifter needs to be in OD, [4th gear] to raise the lockout for shifting into park.
