never changed coil and module, what kind works best

I've got a miss and I am thinking I need to replace my coil and module. Where is the best place to get them[GM, autozone, supplier]?

FWIW..... I read up alot when my original module/coil went south on my '87
GN. All the posts I read suggest the "parts house" modules were definately junk..... overwhelming concensus..........definately stick to GM on the module. I ended up going with the type II module/coilpacks I got in the junkyard off of newer V6 cars..... they seem to be more readily available in the junkyards..... and not quite as hard to get through GM... if you wanted to buy new.....

the only drawback... is if you are a stickler for "stock-appearing".... the type II's have all the plug wires that connect at the rear of the coils....therefore not appearing stock......

oh.... one plus I guess.... you can get aftermarket coils for Type II(takes 3 coils on the type II... instead of one coil for the Type I Magnivox (what came stock on the GN))....Also type II modules seem not to generate negative posts on the "parts house" replacements.... like the original type I modules do....

I still might go junkyard hunting....and get me some GM modules for the original type I just to have an option to go either way.......nice to have options......

Get new GM and be done with it!!!!! stay away from aftermarket stuff, if you cant go new, I have 2 pair's of coils & modules that i can part with one pair.
but try to spend the extra buck and get your self new GM

stay away from aftermarket modules gm only after I learned the hard way but Ive had success with the
accel coil I bought from autozone.

Red T, is there a way to test coil with a ohm meter. I was told by a friend that I could. I'll get the parts from you if mine are bad but I hate to buy something I don't need right now as this combo is new[ie: I'm just about broke].Should I read the same between all of the posts...I'm not. It's the same between the left front and back, middle front and back, and right front and back...but changes if I go between any other two...hope I'm not confusing you

You can test a coil with an ohmeter, and see if it's bad. But just because it passes the test, that doesn't mean it's good. Check each coil, and should be somewhere around 12k. If one is way high, or way low, that means the coil is bad. Casper's makes a tester which will test the coil/module combo, and let you simulate different rpms. Might want to shop around, see if you can borrow one. Have you checked plugs, plug wires, other possibilities?

Coil/module Combo

New wires and plugs...should I read 12k between all coils or just the left, middle and right pairs. If I go from front left to rear right I'm getting 28-29k. Is this normal?
