the stock fan was running fine. I wanted some bling and upgradded to alradco dual fan extreme kit. Before temps went 184 the highest on sm and usually hovered around 180-181 steady. I am stil running a stock stat (from what I believe). Now w new fan install seems only one fan runs constant and the temps fluctuate from 170-190. I dont know why it will gwt that hot. I understand its still in range but its hasnt been that hot it and I wasnt sitting in traffic. I want to get this fig out b4 the real heat wave comes. Any suggestions?
First, I want to say that I have Peter's DUAL FANS and ALUMINUM radiator. I am in AZ and with my car running on a 80* day and inside garage with no circulation........ My car will not go over 165* with one fan (low speed) running. But I also have a 160* thermostat and running distilled water with RMI25. My high fan is set to come on with AC or 180* (via the XFI). No issues.
So with your car and having a STOCK thermostat (as you believe) and probably have a 25 year old radiator, your temps are going to be high as you described. Why is that? Well the stock thermostat doesn't open and allow the coolant to flow and cool until 180*. Plus your car's radiator and block probably have some corrosion/scale built inside. The high fan will not come on until like your car reaches 220* per factory ECM. Now there are several fixes.
1. You can do a radiator flush, change thermostat to 160* (autozone seems to be the only one here to carry the correct size), order some RMI25 from Nick Micale, Alradco or Amazon. And run it in your car after the flush and fresh coolant. RMI25 is a coolant agent as well as a cleaning agent. It will dissolve rust, slim and corrosive build up. After a month or so you will see stuff floating in the radiator on top. Scoop it out. After a month or so, I would change the coolant again and add more RMI25. Being from NY and really humid in the summer and balls cold in the winter, I would shy away from distilled water unless this is just a race car.
2. You can order Casper's fans swith relay so that you can turn on the high fan whenever you want manually.
3. Or you can get a new alradco fan, change the thermostat, add coolant and RMI25.......
It all depends on your budget..... But I highly suggest that you run RMI25.
Let me know if you have any questions...
